Wharncliffe Izula?

Hey all.

I've admired RAT knives since joining the forums, and while I have yet to own one (money is tight my way) I fully plan on it in the not-too-distant future. Y'all make some great knives, and I have the utmost respect for the way you represent yourselves here on the forums.

I was half awake this morning when I had a thought. What about an Izula with a wharncliffe blade? Seems like it would have a lot of practical applications. If I'm not mistaken there was a thread about not introducing new models, but making adjustments to the already available models...I'm not sure if you would consider this a "new model" or a variation, but I'd sure buy it!

Apologies if this has been brought up in the past...

Thanks,

Frosty

It has been discussed before but I think it would be a great idea. I did a crappy photo-chop for the "Design a RAT knife" thread.

I think the tip is used for drilling many times, could not use a wharncliffe for heavy drilling in my opinion.

The design is just not practical enough for RAT Cutlery

About the only thing I ever used an old wharnecliffe for was cutting hay strings on hay bales. It was good at it but my Old Timer did just as well. The Wharne was just one of those knives I didn't care if it got lost so I left it in the hay loft and just used it for that purpose and nothing else. I tell ya, in my opinion, in the real world you just can't improve much on what we're already doing. Sure, we could come up with some new stuff for the cool factor but that would ruin RAT Cutlery and make us just another _________ or ________or _____________ or ___________. Too many un-needed designs and junk in the market place now. Like I said, it just doesn't fit RAT Cutlery.

That's the kind of honesty I can appreciate. Thanks for sticking to your guns, keep up the good work! There are plenty of other manufacturers out there who make wharnies, no need to muddy up your product line. Thanks for the response, and the honesty.

I've never really liked the Wharncliffe blade shape. most of my cutting happens at the blade's belly, a wharncliff or sheepsfoot has no belly

Frostyfingers,

we appreciate the suggestion and interest in RAT Cutlery. Even though we can't always act on most suggestions, we absolutely appreciate and consider all suggestion and comments. Thanks for being part of our forum!

Jeff, you're such a stand up guy, especially with all the B.S you have to put up with (i.e rude email request from weirdos). I believe very few companies one being Rat Cutlery actually consider ones ideas, no matter how outlandish they may be. I'm a RAT Cutlery supporter for life. Also not to get to far away from this topic, I personally find no use for the Wharncliffe blade.

The forums know I'm unhealthily obsessed with anything Wharnecliffe...But I'm an urban rat, not a RAT. The box cutter shape is more specialized for what I do day-in-day-out and has some nifty science going for it, but out in the woods my Mora is in charge and my Wharnies are only for the smaller chores they're cut out for. I'm not even sure if there's even a carbon steel Wharnie being made by anyone, it's just a shape with a specific nature to it. Wharnies are utility knives, hawkbills are either rope cutters or fighters, drop points are the workhorses, etc.

I just got my first Wharnie and I absolutely love it for MY edc needs, however I'd agree with RC not picking up that blade shape, I see no purpose for them.

though, there are some custom makers making hunting/outdoors seeming wharncliffe knives. And plenty of people even swear by using them for hunting/skinning, etc... I'll admit, I don't miss the belly near as much as I thought I would, if at all, and the blade shape is much more capable than many people give it credit for.

also, maybe it's just my eyes, but Orrey's little photoshop is more of a sheepsfoot shape?? Wharnies have more of a tip, and could even be used for some finer drilling.

I'm an oddball that really likes wharnies for outdoors knives. But I've already got a great custom one, although it's a full sized knife and not a necker. As much as I'd like to see a wharny Izula, I can get a custom in that style made up if I *really* want one. The Izula is a very good design as it is.
