A while back, there was some discussion of a possible new knife based on the Jumpmaster, but with a Wharncliffe blade profile, instead of the sheepsfoot profile on the current version.

Is there any news on this?

Sal actually ground a couple and gave them to a couple of members here. I was one of those lucky members. :) I think the last I heard was they were thinking to do a clip point version but nothing about a Wharncliffe. The good news is, if you want a Wharnie, it's a pretty easy regrind on the original Jumpmaster.

Here's a photo on the one that Sal gave me.

Surfgringo, a couple questions.....I notice most of your spyderco's you use on fish have a serrated blade. Do you find it better for cleaning fish? Longer lasting between sharpening? Has anyone ever told you you look like house (the TV show) :-) I find all your posts interesting and really look forward to your instagram pic's!

Thanks much
Mike

Hey Mike, I do like a se knife for a few fish cleaning tasks but the main reason you see me using them is because I choose H1 for corrosion resistance. I get a lot better edge retention out of se H1. I have tried using pe H1 and the edge just doesn't hold up long enough for the work I do. If a steel like s30v could withstand the corrosive environment I am in, you would see me using many more plain edge knives for fishing.

And yeah, someone else on here once mentioned I look like that handsome devil that plays House on TV. Hah.:p

Thanks!

I don't know if I have enough courage to grind down a brand new and perfectly good knife ...

Hi Surfingringo! Do you think modern stainless steels (s30V, s35-VN, cpm154, m390) are really not that capable compared to H1 is salt water environment? Thanks a lot!

Hi Cyrano,

As Lance mentioned, we do have a leaf/spear-point version of the Jumpmaster in-the-works". Dubbed the Jumpmaster 2.

Also, you could probably find a custom maker or some on this forum that could regrind your knife for you.

Hi augostos, yes, the difference is immense. Don't get me wrong, if H1 did not exist, I could get by with any of the modern stainless steels, but it would require much more care and maintenance...especially on a folder. I have an H1 knife that I leave on my kayak permanently. It never gets washed or rinsed other than a dunking in the ocean. I have tried the same with my Southfork in s90v and it shows significant rust within 24 hours. Another problem with "regular" stainless steels in a salt environment is you have to do way more sharpening. The apex is very susceptible to corrosion and will break down and lose sharpness over a single day fishing (even if it is not used).

Like I said, I could survive just fine with any of the modern stainless steels but they aren't even in the same ballpark of corrosion resistance as H1.

Thanks, Sal! Can you share any estimate for when the Jumpmaster 2 might be on the market?

Hi, Sal. An honour to talk to you again. I've already pre-ordered the Orange Rock Salt and the Snap-iT for next year, (I am a TRUE H1 fan, in case nobody had noticed that yet...) and would very much like to know anything you could tell us about the "Jumpmaster 2".
Any specs, appearences in the near future, improvements...Thanks!

Also, your sharpening jobs are awesome. Really, when you meant to make a company that sold true sharp and slicey folders you weren't kidding. The sharpest blade I have ever had came this last month...it was from the awesome Spyderhawk Salt. What a sharpening marvel you did there! I take of my hat to you...

didn't even feel it.

Have a nice day everybody!

@Sal: Is there any update on the possible schedule for the Jumpmaster 2? ... Thanks!

Hi Cyrano, I certainly don't presume to speak for Sal but I hang around here a lot and have watched how the process works over the last few years. If Sal still hadn't even seen a prototype as of December, you probably don't want to hold your breath on the Jumpmaster 2. I'm sure its going to happen, I just don't think you'll be seeing it in the next couple of months or anything. Hopefully Sal will come along and give you a more informed answer but I thought I'd throw my own speculation in there for whatever it's worth. :)

If you are interested in a wharncliffe shape like mine, I would still encourage you to do a regrind or have someone do it for you. H1 is easy to grind and it's a fairly straightforward job. I'd be happy to do it for you were I in the States.

Please include slots on the sheath for dive straps. I love my aqua salt but the sheath is limiting. I can mount it to a normal open circuit bc using the holes and bolts, but if I'm using a rebreather thats not my normal gear, i need slots so i can strap it to my body. Some slots would go a long way, even if you dont provide the straps, i can find my own but i need a way to fix it to my body. Im all in for a pointy jump master but a aqua with a dive oriented sheath would be perfect.
