Wharncliffe tip stability/strength

I've got a 24 spanto and love it but looking to pick up a 3.5 w/ Wharncliffe blade. My only reservations are the strength of the tip, I've handled them in person and they are fairly thin up there. Have any of you experienced or heard of any issues w/ the tip breaking or chipping? Thanks for any input.

I believe I heard of one breaking, it was dropped on the concrete or pavement (don't recall which). They are awfully pointy, they will break if you mistreat it, it probably will never break cutting stuff.

Agreed.
Never have heard of a failure but, I can imagine the Wharnie tip Not surviving that which most tips (even robust ones) wouldn't survive.
The Wharnie is a deserving favorite of many and well worth getting hold of.
Come jeans weather - mine will be pulling full time duty.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll just need to be a little more careful with it....or mebbe I'll just get another spanto...no arm twisting required ;)

I have found the Wharnie plenty robust in utility type tasks. Tape, boxes, etc. I wouldn't do any prying with it though

More careful? Nah.... use it just try not to drop it (or any nice knife for that matter) I drop stuff I am not used to Gripping. Knives are held differently than cell phones or make-up mirrors - Both of those can be dropped quite easily (or so I hear) :)

I've used mine for several tasks that I wouldn't do with other makers folding knives...like pry open sealed/glued lids on several food packages/toy packages/mailed boxes/etc and even clean debris from tiny hard to get places on firearms and such. Plus cut all types of things...all this and the use is not yet visible and have only needed to clean up the edge (more than simple upkeep) once so far.

All these examples are minimal..but this isn't my primary folding knife.

I managed to chip mine...cutting open a customers rework. He had sent one of our hydraulic bearings back for routine maintenance and I wasn't careful enough opening the package and I struck the lower housing with the tip and it broke/chipped. As an FYI...our bearings are type 3 hard ano'ed and they are rather robust. Would my Spanto have chipped? I don't think so...been dic'd up...certainly. I will also mention that it was less than a 1/16 of an inch chip. Hardly noticeable. I will also add that it was fresh back from the Ranch after a sharpening and maybe mine was just a little more pointier than normal. This is in no way the fault of the knife...but next time I'll be a little more careful when opening unknown packages. If it is really a concern then step up to this...

Kinda what I was afraid of 1shot. Obviously Hinderers are tanks and I take nothing away from them but I think the Wharnie is just slightly more vulnerable than the others tho still better than most on the market.

Where can I get one of those armored tipped wharnies ??:thumbup: I'm sure it's rarer than Obama going through congress and costs a small fortune.

I have been using my wharncliffe for about three months now and have done some light prying. Matter fact I tore apart my IKEA table, a.k.a. very cheap table with my Wharncliffe. My wife uses a 3 inch Warrencliffe and she's done a lot of gardening and other types of outdoor activities. It's no spanto blade but doesn't feel fragile either.
Here is a picture of my wife's knife after our camping trip
