Wharncliffe?

I've been looking through the RMK online catalogue, planning my next purchase. Looking at all of those traditional patterns, I started thinking that they should have a Wharncliffe in their lineup. Is that something that they've offered in the past? Has anyone expressed interest in such a thing?

I don't think Randall is open to suggestions about what styles and options they offer. One of the rare few knife makers that can afford to have that attitude I would guess.

TC,

The non-catalog 'Cattleman' model probably comes closest - it has a Sheeps foot blade grind...

Hope that helps

It does make sense that a company with an enormous waiting list might not be inclined to put resources into market research and product development. There is simply no need. Bad information might alienate their current client base, and good information would lead to longer waits. I suppose it is a lose-lose proposition.

That cattleman is about 95% what I was imagining. Thank you very much.

Waiting list?... We prefer the term "Booked ahead", rather than 5 years behind in our orders!!--:)

By the way, RMK released a new model this year, the #28 "Woodsman", a full-tang drop-point hunter, and we are always listening to the public's suggestions for future models.

OK, here's my suggestion, how about a Wharncliffe sailing knife? I'm thinking about a 4" full flat ground stainless blade with no guard, micarta slabs and a thong tube.

I'd buy at least two - good suggestion. Draw it up and send it to GTR; the worse he can do is say no...:)

I'll save you a stamp...

RMK appreciates the suggestion...however, we do not do flat grinds on any knife.

Since there are some unspoken limitations, what else is out of the question for customer feedback on options? How do these two statements qualify one another?

I'm really a fan of your knives, I own a few more of RMK's than any other, and the knives I own continue to grow in that respect so this is far from trolling nor is it calling you out. I would like to know if I should look to another company for a few of the options you no longer produce.

Any feedback is appreciated, thank you.

I said we are always listening and also appreciate the suggestions...doesn't mean that we're going to take you up on all these suggestions though!?! Got plenty of people waiting for that Stainless Smithsonian that's NOT going to happen, or saw-teeth on the Stillettos...etc.etc.

I don't think there needs to be any qualifying needed here...

There is a great site to answer almost all your questions, maybe someone could post a link to it for you, I'm afraid I am nearly computer illiterate...

Take care my friend and keep the suggestions coming...

Model 14 with handle bolts and an extended tang. :D please.

I kind of asked before, and Scott told me that there was only one person experienced enough to be doing this special soldering at that time, and the job takes so much time that only Astros could be accommodated. My post, above, was intended to find out whether Scott has anyone additional learning this operation--if so, then maybe there's a chance that the Shop might offer this expensive option (probably with a whopper of a charge).

Steve,
Nice to hear from you sir. There is a someone training on the 17's and even another almost ready to take care of them when he's out...however...

RMK will not be offering SS hilts on any other models for the same reason that the 25 handle is limited to a few...TIME RESTRAINTS...

In case this is new to some... RMK is currently booking for June 0f 2015, or 58 months...with this kind of delay on orders it would be counter productive to put man hours in something (SS hilts) that would probably run away as the best "new" option to come around in quite some time!! The order changes would be astronomical and time would practically come to a halt for the cost, time, work, man hours, etc...etc... that would hit the shop.

Just as a note: one of the only RMK knives that I have wanted for a while is an all SS 18, we've done these before and I wanted to see if GTR would allow me to have one for my 25Th anniversary in the shop...turned downed for shop reasons, and I am still looking for it!!

I thought it was a good suggestion and APPRECIATED GTR hearing me out and discussing it with me!!

EXACTLY what I was praying for, Scott, an all SS 18!
Sorry that it can't be done--so I'll just dream on.
Kind thanks for the reply (and may the Sox prevail!),

Well, Scott, since I won't be able to order a Model 18 with stainless hilt, here's my attempt to have a stainless hilt on a "Model 15":
I removed (and saved!) the scales from an older Astro, one that has very little 'hook' or 'hump' to the top of blade. Then, I was lucky enough to persuade a very skilled knifemaker to fabricate a slotted handle (out of a block of tenite-colored G-10), and then fit it to the Astro blade-and-hilt. Here is the result--totally able to be converted back to the Astro configuration.
What do you think?
-Steve
