David Mary Customs - Wharnificent Model

Disclaimer: I am highly OCD and a perfectionist maybe to a fault. All opinions in this review are based on my hand size and what I appreciate in a knife. David and I are friends, however, this does not sway my opinion in any way.

This model, the Wharnificent, came about when David had some room on his first batch of Magnacut. When I saw the shape, I knew I had to have one and with some handle specs of my own. :) David really goes out of his way to make the knife you envision.

This Wharnificent arrived yesterday, and oh man, oh man…when I peeled back the packaging I was absolutely stunned and delighted!
Upon picking it up, I immediately knew this knife wasn’t going anywhere…ever.

Let’s touch on the ergonomics of the Wharnificent handle. I requested flat scales with slight contour, and this is exactly what I received. I tend to use my knives in many different grips, whether pinch, hammer, full or choked, and this knife feels great in hand. It is a full grip for my “small side of medium” hands.
One thing that I am impressed with is that the handle shape does not “push” your hand into the front finger dip, so it is very comfortable.
David made three part, unbuffed micarta/G10 scales with G10 liners for me. I’m a huge fan of unbuffed micarta on smaller knives. This makes them feel very secure, and the Wharnificent is no different. It feels very secure in my hand.
There are no gaps in the joining of all materials and all mating is perfect.
The tubes are also very well executed and are perfectly flush with the scales.
From beginning of scale to butt of the knife, the handle measures 3 3/4”.

The Wharnificent has a wharncliffe shaped blade from Magnacut and it’s height is 1 1/8” at the tallest. The cutting edge is almost perfectly flat with just a small upward curve towards the tip. To the naked eye, it is hard to see. Only when I put it down on a flat surface can I tell the upward curve.
The blade stock is a hair under 5/32’s and David’s grind brings it nice and thin behind the edge.
The blade has a slight forward cant which is just wonderful. It points the tip down toward what you are cutting.
The knife has perfectly placed jimping that is not too aggressive. It gives reassuring security and is surprisingly quite comfortable.
My Wharnificent came with a very nice and sharp working edge, and I am looking forward to putting it to use.
The length from end of scale to tip of blade is 2 7/8” with a cutting edge coming in at 2 3/4”.

I have had the pleasure of experiencing David grow in his knife making abilities, as many of you all have. He has progressed quickly and immensely in the last year. This Wharnificent proves just that.

If you are looking for a small but hand filling knife for EDC, the Wharnificent is the perfect candidate. With an overall length of just under 7 1/4,” and a cutting edge of 2 3/4,” this will hide in your pocket or disappear on your belt, ready for the day’s chores. It’s 3 3/4” handle is hand filing and along with the jimping will give you confidence during use.
For a very finely handcrafted working knife, you cannot beat David’s prices for the quality you get.

I am extremely please with my Wharnificent and very much looking forward to putting it to work. But first…a fob and a sheath!

Keep ‘em Sharp

*I’ll try to remember to come back and update “in use” photos. :)*

Also! I am making a sheath for this knife as we speak, and I will have a WIP in my sub. I’ll update this post with a link if anyone wants to follow the sheath build. :)

Edit to add sheath build link.

Thank you for such a kind review of my humble work. I would love to watch you build a sheath. As I told you by text, once this knife is in a Sharp & Fiery sheath it will have "married up".

Great review and it is awesome you are so happy with your knife. The knife looks great as do your photo’s.
I got an edc from David about 3 weeks ago and love it. I have another being made. He is such a great person to deal with and I really appreciate his attention to detail, as well as making what he feels will be the right knife for what you are seeking to use it for. Enjoy your new knife!

Designs like your knife, are what drew me to David's work.

Wharncliffes, sheepsfeet, seax, modified spear points, and other blade shapes with more spine drop down to the tip, rather than edge rise to the tip, are my favorite users. Small and big blades.

Looks like a fun blade to carry around. Thanks for posting the clear photos and specs.

Who made the sheath....?

Just joking - I know you made it. Looks great from here.

What's the story on the inset, scaled leather portion of the sheath - another creature like aligator, or did you texture the leather to look like that?

Thank you for the kind words. It pumps me up knowing people appreciate my work, and I try my best to make my products as perfect as possible.
There is a link here in the first thread to the sheath’s WIP thread in my sub. :) Iff’n you want to check out the process.

To answer your question directly, this time I used lizard skin for the inlay. :)
