Hey guys,

I haven’t been working around a shop for quite some time, and I don’t have many tools. I was thinking about buying a file to repair the tip on this knife while holding it in some vise grips. Do any of you have any suggestions about another way to go about this?

That's what I'd do. I'd file the spine down to the edge, to keep as much edge as possible. The angles that are already there, you'll never match those, and the it wouldn't fit in the sheath.
Draw a line with a Sharpie, to see the angle you want to file away.

Yup, bring the spine down to restore the point. Personally, I'd use a coarse grit (220 or so) Wet-or-dry taped do your bench top, or to a glass plate. I'd definitely use the sandpaper to finish it up, anyway. Given the nice, straight edge? You can even use it at some higher grit (1K-2K) to polish up the edge while you're at it!

A file would probably work, but without a vice to hold the blade in while you're filing, it'll be really tricky and probably scar up the coating.

The cheapest way?
Go out in front of your house and rub the spine on the sidewalk until the point comes back. :D
You could, of course, use a file and some sandpaper also.

Thanks. I remember as a kid sharpening a knife on a bench grinder.. Ouch. I do have a mechanical type of degree though. I just haven’t read too much into your ways of knife making (fixing in this case), but I want to. It’s another time and money thing that I'm working towards.
