What’s wrong with me?

As you may have read, I finally made my first « real » or “complete » knife if you want. It was the first time I made a knife that was hair shaving sharp. I can’t believe how proud I was when I first tested it on my arm. I know that it is not over by far. I still need to see if it will hold that cutting ability through regular use but that’s not the point. I mean each time I see the hairless patch on my forearm I feel proud.

Now, how is it that I am proud of spending many months (even years), a lot of money (for my means anyway), sweat, blood, etc to make something that shaves just like a 89 cents disposable razor I can buy at WallyMart.

I guess I am probably not the only one who feels like that here. I hope so. I just wonder what’s behind this. Am I fed up with this “disposable everything” mentality nowadays, sure. But I still appreciate some of the comforts that we enjoy by not having to actually make everything we need ourselves.

How much do you guys charge for therapy? ;)

I don't think there's anything wrong with you... well, you are Canadian, but there's nothing we can do about that. :D

Medically diagnosed as knifemakingitis. There is no cure, but it can be controlled by using tools and steel found in knifemaking shops.

Is there also a disease that everyone around me, something like knivesmakemikeaserialkilleritis? (knives make mike a serial killer - itis)

I resent that remark, Mike. I haven't killed anything but a case of beer in years.

:D

I think I see your point though... sometimes when "normal" folks find you're into knives, they automatically assume you're a violent crazed lunatic. Refraining from giggling madly when you show them how sharp your knives are helps a little. But some sheeple will just never understand.

I'm lucky; I grew up and live in a blue-collar semi-rural area where many folks are hunters, fishermen, farmers, carpenters, etc... folks that appreciate a good edge. When I tell people (even non-outdoorsy-types) around here that I make custom knives, they often say, "Wow, that must be hard to learn/ take a lot of skill." Occasionally, they order a knife... mostly they just say "Can you make my 'Wally World junk knife' that sharp?" Well, yeah... but you'll have to bring it back to me in a week.

Dang James I never knew you were so wimpy. Man I can do that much in a weekend with out even trying. :D

But I do know what you mean about the sheeple. I had a nurse that worked for me for two years before she ever noticed that I had a knife on my belt. I thought she was going to have a heart attack when she saw it. She was yelling at me and asking who I was planning on killing with that. It just so happened that a patient had sent me a Kukuri from overseas and I had just got it. I said naw not with this little knife and I reached under my desk and pulled the Kukuri out and said but I could do some real damage with this and just smiled. She almost fainted. HEHEHE

Now, them's fightin' words!! What I meant was, I seldom kill more than a case in one sitting. If a case lasted me years, I'd be a much wealthier man! :D Next time you're in my neck of the woods, we'll make sure we have a sober driver and have a drinking contest while we talk about steel. ;) If you feel sassy, I'll bring along some secret-weapon home-made wine to share, and I promise to carry you home, or at least to my spare room. :D

Since we're gonna be drinkin', let's agree to check our weapons at the door. ;)

About sheeple... my standard response when people freak on my pocket-knife is, "You'll never see the one I would use for self-defense. Especially if I actually need it." :D That usually quiets them up pretty quick.

I once shot a bowl of Cheerios with a 12 guage. Does that make me a "cereal killer"?

Ha Hah! Patrice is Canadian! Eh?

Actually, that 89 cent razor, if you pop it out of the plastic, and float it through the hair above your skin, it will pop those hairs off mid hair. ...Now that I've planted that seed... - find yourself a leather strop and some chromium oxide to load it with. Then you'll have a different disease, related to knife making, but subtly different. The biggest downside I can tell is lots of paper things around the house, like ad fliers etc end up with little shavings and slits in them - and there are knives laying about (or aboot to our northern friend) that you don't want to accidently bump into the work bit.

Welcome to the madness.

You're a knifemaker... that's what wrong with you and most of us here :(

When I was in the Army I had to see an Orthepedic surgeon for my 3rd surgery. When I got on the table I had to pull my belt knife off, when he started moving my leg around my folder fell out. "I reckon I could just use these to start in on ya" he liked the belt knife and bought it after he finished scheduling me for surgery :)

did you know its impossible to shoot butterflies with a 12 guage?

Ok at least I am on good company. :D

And Nathan, no more seeds please. I've already have quite a garden going up there. ;)

It's just a little leather strop. I mean, how bad could that be?

It's part of the symptoms. It makes us sane people want to make knives, but the same germs affect the sheeple's brain differently, making them believe we will draw our knives after sunset and start slitting throats until sunrise.:)

Said the drug dealer to the addict. ;)

Kidding aside, I will try it for sure.

Nathan, I have some 8-9oz leather here. Is that the right thickness for a strop? I've seen them with a hook on one end and a large ring to hold on the other. Is that about right?

As long as I am getting hooked might as well do it right. ;)

Thanks

Patrice

Isn't the cure for the sheeples' disease to slit their throat in the dark of night? Or maybe that's just one cure. :p
