I will think on this. Good question...
What do I NEED is a question I've been struggling with lately. I know there are some knives that I do not need that bring me pleasure, that I will never get rid of, like my fancy Espada XL. It's just beautiful and I love it and it brings happiness. That is up for an engraving next. I have not cut with the knife yet, though I intend to once I've gone through enough trial and error.
I got a red/black "vampire" themed Paragon Warlock. First knife I ever returned. I knew it would be an occasional carry, like my Microtech 70, due to legality, but it sparked no joy and I just thought "I don't need this heavily illegal, double edged gravity knife. It looks cheap, the action sucks, and I won't ever carry and use it, at least the little Microtech, smaller than your pennknife, will be likely overlooked, but I have better EDC knives, better emergency knives, that are legal and look nicer."
I think it was

who coined the term "maximum minimalism", something that has stuck with me since I read him talking about it (Sorry if I got the wrong person there and it was somebody else!).
I think a good quality Japanese kitchen knife might be what would serve me best, if I had only one knife to get again. I have EDC knives up the wazoo, Native 5 in Rex, Sage 5 and Shaman in M4, ZDP Endura, wharnie Endura, 8 PM2s, tiny wharncliffes like the K390 Dragonfly, tiny hawkbills like the Cricket and Dodo, climbing knives with hooks... Tantos, 7.5" waved pocket-swords, grab the Buck, CS GRIK, or RAT for some dirty work, all of Spydie's reverse-S and Janich knives, Opinels, Douks... I probably have more folders than I'll ever need, for many purposes. I love a lot of these folders and am never going to own just one or two knives, but I could see myself going from 40 knives to like, 20.
My fixed blade collection consists of a a Benchmade 3V Puukko, a 119, Ontario SP-1 (dull), various Moras from 120 carving knife to Companion HD,], Z-cuts from Spyderco in my kitchen. I think the laws in my area have kind of brainwashed me into thinking folders are the only "real" knife when in reality... I would just need a couple of good fixed blades and the legality to carry them.
Bit off topic, but in focusing on my needs instead of what is cool, I think my next move should be selling some folders for a GOOD fixed blade, that can slice.
