What a deal!!!

Just got back from a trip to the local outdoors store. I wanted to pick up some 550 cord and check out the flashlights. They had a CMG Infinity Task Light for $20 so I grabbed that since it wasn't a terrible price and then I went to look in the knife case. Not much new in the case since last time I was there, but everything was displayed different and had new price tags. I wasn't planning on buying anything but saw a Buck/Strider tanto folder (880-00) that had been there for a while so I thought I would ask the price to see if it was on sale or anything (tag was hanging upside down so I couldn't see). Salesman pulls it out and hands it to me, price tag says $69.99. I was shocked. I asked him to double check that for me and told him it was more like a $130 knife. He pulls out a boxed one and sure enough, tag on it says $129.99 but he rings it into the register to double check and it comes up for $69.99 again. My lucky day!!! I take it to the checkout and the guy ringing it up is certainly surprise, he checks the wholesale pricing and says they payed $10 more then what they are selling it to me for. I couldn't beleive it. I wouldn't be surprised if those prices get corrected tonight, but I sure got a sweet deal on a nice knife today.

I've been eyeing these Buck/Striders for a while, but just never felt like dropping the cash for one. I prefer the spear point ones, but hey, for $69.99 I'm not complaining. It'll make a great hard use folder.

Depending how long it was sitting on the shelf, you may have just been the first one smart enough to buy it! GOOD deal.

I live about 15 miles from the Buck factory and go to the "Company Store" for deals. I've never seen anything near that price on the Buck/Strider - even at their "special sales". That's why I still don't own one. You did good!

I hate to be a jerk here, but I hope that this wasn't at some small mom-and-pop outdoor store, because it sounds like what you did was take advantage of a simple pricing mistake causing the store to loose money on the deal. If it was at a big corporate store that wouldn't be right either, but it's certainly much harder to feel bad for them.

Sorry to sound all self-righteous.

Just my two pennies,

It's not a small store, but it is locally owned, not a chain store. I didn't pressure them into selling it to me at that price at all and I did tell them that I knew it was worth $130. I too would have felt way too bad to try and take advantage of a nice buisness like that, which is why I felt compelled to tell them what the price should be. But, after all that, since it rang up that way and he insisted he would sell it to me at that price I couldn't pass it up. I don't feel bad at all, I gave them every chance to back out and say it was just a pricing error and I was very polite about it, in the end they decided they would sell it at the lowest marked price.

" I gave them every chance to back out and say it was just a pricing error and I was very polite about it"

Well I should hope you DO feel fine about it. What more could you do, REFUSE to pay retail when they're offering you a mark-down?? No, I too would walk away whistling a happy tune from that scenario.

You did the right thing by pointing out the mistake. They CHOSE to sell it to you at that price. Congrats.

Hey, I'm the kinda guy that gives back $10 at the convenience store when they are busy...I did it last week...I owed $36...I gave them $40..they gave me $14 in change.

But, I would never argue (or feel bad) with someone that gave me a good price. Like you, if the seller seems incompetant or crazed, I ask for comfirmation.

There is nothing wrong with a good deal...as long as you and the seller are in your right minds. Rare yes...but not wrong. :)

At those prices, you could buy a few more and sell them for a small profit.

I'd pay $79.95 and $4 for shipping for the one you just bought! :D

I'm strongly thinking about going back to see if they still have them priced like that on Monday. If so, I may just buy them all (I'm guessing they only have between 1 and 3 left)

Slide13,

I'm not trying to say that you are EVIL or that what you did was just dead WRONG, I just thought it was worth mentioning and thinking about.

The only other thing I would like to point out is that I think it makes a difference whether you spoke with the owner of the store (the guy who stands to lose money on such a deal) or some other guy who works there (who probably doesn't care if the store looses a few bucks because it doesn't directly affect him).

Either way, you sound like a decent guy and I'm sure you weren't trying to screw anybody, and it sounds like you did make a reasonable effort to allow them to correct the mistake.

Again, I don't mean to sound all self righteous, I can't say that I've always taken the high road with every decision that I've every been faced with.

Like I said, I just thought it was something worth thinking about.

By the way, is this the latest version of the 880 Tanto? They may just be clearing out the old version. I have been in retail for quite a few years and have sold a number of items for below cost to clear them out.

No, it isn't the newest version it's the original model. I know it's been on the shelf for over a year now so that could be the case, though they arn't known for putting stuff on sale to that degree.

I don't think I spoke to the owner, I spoke to two different people who worked there though and the one was the person in charge of the gun/knife counter. That guy seemed pretty confident in his decision that he was charging the right price.
