What a beauty. And in such terrific condition. You need a sailboat now.

You would use it to cut rope by laying the rope on a board, put the blade across the rope and strike the back of the blade with a hammer of some sort (maybe even a wooden pin used to belay rigging). It is my understanding that pointy knives were not generally allowed on the old sailing ships because they could be used to stab and could kill in a fight between shipmates. Bring a pointed knife onboard, back in the day, and the first mate would break off the point and give it back to you.

I wonder if it came with a marlin spike and sheath like the Linder knife linked here: http://www.worldknives.com/products/linder-sailors-boat-knife-with-marlin-spike-nr-168010-882.html

It looks like it is massively thick. Is it?

Perhaps the folks at Buck "missed the boat", by not producing more of that blade design...Nice score on that one Armand

Great early Friday pic Armand-thats very very different...in a very very good way:thumbup::D

Lucky 'E', I've never seen one of those but leave it to you to come up with stuff like that .

Plum is going to fall out for that one too.
I'd buy one if it was an LE.

Nice. Is it called a sailing knife because of the etch, or is it a traditional pattern, like a rope knife of some kind?

Armand,

Send Joe H a photo and ask him to look up the custom order info on your knife. He has that info on hand. I'd sure like to read the history on that knife...it would make a very cool artical for the BCCI news letter also.....hint!
