What a pleasant surprise

Got these jive turkeys the other day. I knew what I was getting with the 2 and the 9 as I already have one of each. Good enough to get another one. But, imagine my surprise when I discovered that the Famine Tanto and the War Sword are the US made 1095cv versions! It said they were the SK5 types on the dealers site I order from. Super stoked! As soon as knifey wifey saw them she laid immediate claim to the War Sword.

I absolutely love the feel of the Tanto in the hand. Yeah the scales aren't the greatest but that can be rectified. Ultimately I wish it was a full fine edge but hey, whatever. Thinking I might get a kydex sheath made up for it. Also an etch and strip job may be in order.

Whilst there will be some that disagree, I reckon this blade will be a fine bush knife. I'm really looking forward to taking her out and beating the snot out of it. I have since changed the scales to the black ones which give it a bit more visual credibility.

Love you Kabar. Best. Knives. EVER. (And by that I mean ALL Kabars, not just the ZK blades)

Very nice buy! Congrats! :D
Would you be willing and able to share the name of the dealer you got them from?

Yeah man, no worries. The place I get my stuff is Cutting Edge Knives here in Brisbane, Aus. I know they're not a paying sponsor of BF but I buy local as the exchange rate is killer and I wanna support Australian business. They're completely online. Just search em.

(Mods: again, I'm sorry that I have mentioned a non-sponsor of BF. Was just answering a question).

Nice. Appreciate the info! Cheers!

Mods, if you have to slap someone's wrist, let it me mine.

Kabar brought all the fixed blade ZK production back to the US and changed them to 1095cv last year sometime. Your online retailer probably didn't remember to change hid website description. They may not have even realized that there has been a change.

That's exactly right Zz. The only US ones I could find were on the Kabar website and they don't ship OS's. Oddly enough when I opened the post package the FIRST thing I saw was an oval 'Made in the USA' sticker. Really don't know how old mate missed it. Needless to say I was running around the house yelling USA USA USA!

Hey, that was MY idea! :D

I'm actually expecting my wife to get me the Famine Tanto for my birthday next month and I fully intend on etching and stripping it. If you mod it, please post up the results.

By the way, what do you think of the Acherons? I got one a while back just to have one and did a weird etch job on it. It's my desk letter opener...

You'll probably beat me to the punch though orezona. I think a heavy patina will be on the cards too. Make it look like it's been chopping heaps of zombies! Wasn't overly impressed with my acherons. Both were quite dull and they are a PITA to get in and out of the little slot on the sheath. But I was just stoked that the ZKs came with them for free. They're only China stainless but I'm sure a good hit on a worksharp and they'd go alright.

The Tanto itself was damn sharp out of the box. I nice convex on both edges wouldn't go astray though. The sheath isn't all that bad IMO. Coupla MOLLE locks in the webbing in the back and you can attach it to packs and it of course has a belt loop. And the front pocket is MASSIVE! Seriously, you could have a large Altoids tin for a med kit, another one for a fire kit, a spare ferro rod, a small ration brick and an 11 in a small taco style kydex sheath all in there at the same time, probably- my guess anyway, I can fit my whole fist in there (haha, that's what she said!)

Dude, I reckon you'll love the whole package and because you'll be getting a later model version it will come as the 1095cv steel. The scales seem a bit novelty but the blade MAKES you take it seriously..

Wow that's a nice box of sharpies you got there BeeKay! Congrats on the new steel. I'm liking the side by side comparison between the war sword and the nine. Looks like it'd be a fun blade to take out to the woods.

Thanks Aikiguy! Yes the War Sword feels quite wieldly as it is lighter than the 9. Whilst it has been touted as not as good at chopping as the 9 it still feels like it'll do some damage. I can't wait to get a chance to try them out properly. Trust me, when I do, you guys will get plenty of pics!

Nice set Springy! I have the Four Horsemen set from Taiwan. Although I haven't put them thru any paces, they're fun to play with. Famine is my fav and the wife keeps it near the bed because she has nightmares of an intruder. That, and her 16 which she refuses to snap the sheath on. My daughter claims the War sword in case of a zombie apocalypse. Is the Death dagger still around? I love the Pestilence chopper as well. One day I hope to give them all four some sort of matching set mods but I'm waiting to see what others come up with(besides having other projects step in front). So, get on it boys, let see them customized ZK's!

Just checked on line and Tomars does NOT carry the DDs, but checking the Kabar site, they have them. So, ??? The ones listed on Kabar's site are shown as still being the SK5 versions from Taiwan rather than the US made 1095 cro-van of all the others.

Hahaha! I work a lot of night shifts so my wife always has something next to her at night too. Sometimes I choose one for her but most of the time she grabs a 9 and my D2 Extreme. The D2 for pokin holes and the 9 for limb removal she reckons..

I'm super keen on getting the Swabbie, the Pestilence and the Zomstro cleaver thing. Death dagger doesn't really do it for me though.

I think the Tanto will look all sorts of cool with some mods and like I said I'm really eager to take her out bush and give it a crack. Will take the sword as well. Cos let's face it, when zombies start marching around looking for brains to munch on (I think I'll be ok though, I don't have one) we're going to need these knives for more than zombie processing..

Hmmm. Interesting. Perhaps they didn't sell as well as the others. If they actually looked more like a dagger then I'd be more inclined to get one I think. Not that I can over here, daggers are restricted by law in Aus. Wouldn't even get it into the country..

They are dagger shaped (symmetrical pointy blade) but the spine is unsharpened. Does the Aus customs service go by shape alone or by # of sharp edges?

Sharpened edges. I can get the DD without any problem. If it were more stiletto shaped with both edges sharpened then it would be seized and destroyed. But thats the way I would want it shaped. With a cool stacked leather or kraton handle.

The one thing about the "Death dagger" is how it reminds me of the old Western Cutlery L77, at least in the blade. A lot of U.S. Marine's liked that knife in both WW2 and Korea.

Very interesting sac troop. Just Googled some images of the L77. Yes the blade does look very similar to the DD and I like how the handle is also symmetrical. That's the part I'm not fond of on the DD. If it were more symmetrical, perhaps like a good ol' FU it would defs be more appealing in mine eye. I just don't think the handle matches the blade profile..
