After four days in northern Michigan hunting squirrels and camping out (with Rona, the fiancee at the Holiday Inn) I should be in a good mood. But the newest Smokey mountain catalog was waiting for me... yech.

Back cover, brand new, the Schrade "Locks it's Doors" Commemorative. Several years ago, someone had the bright idea of including a toy truck with a knife, to make it 'collectible'.. was it Case? Well, you get a toy truck with this great new collectible as well. And the knife, well, it's one of the 'Clip-Hangers', and it has a chintzy blade etch with a padlock and the 'locks it's doors' logo.

Guess I am among friends here so I can get away with just a little rant...

'Scuse me, gotta go tend to those squirrels.

Real Schrade content: Like generations of other squirrel hunters, I used one of the best of blades to clean my kills. My old favorite, the 97OT. Yep, it's made outta Schrade+ steel, and I've never had a problem with that good stuff.

Did you notice that SMKW uses the same truck for many different knives?
Must have a run of that truck factory as well as the remains of Schrade.
I just didnt get the connection. Its been a long time since I could set the points on a truck using a knife or match book cover.

97-OT sounds about perfect for squirrels

I have only been out twice, once in the rain and once I just stopped by the woods on the way back from a service call, not enough time to really sit and wait. I have always used my old Gerber for squirrels, but haven't been out much the past few years, stupid job...

I'm thinking that my 96-OT will be my main squirrel knife now, though, as the Gerber is going into semi-retirement.

"Locks it's doors" commemorative, sounds sorta tacky to me. :grumpy:

lrv, I finally found that catalog, I'll get it into the mail tommorow! :)

I was just thinking about the etch on these. Wonder when it was done? If it was before the end of July, that must have been some message to those folks doing it. If it was after the closing of the plant, I wonder who did it? The NIGHT crew? Some other company?
Anyway, that is a stupid cOMMERATIVE, in my opinion. I hope SMKW gets stuck with them. I bet the truck doesn't run worth a dam# either. :grumpy:

There are a few companies that do blade etchings cheaper than a manufacturer can co in-house. Or, as in the case of the famous Aurum Etchings, of Garland, TX.. can do better. I've seen SMKW come out with some very quick 'commemorative' etchings, so no doubt they have someone do it for them, fast and cheap.

Actually, Schrade still has a skeleton crew down there trying to fill out the last of the orders and use up the last of the supplies. They are scrambling to get as much production out as possible to bring down the huge deficit that they had. Smokey has basically bought out all of the knife stock that remains on the floor, so it would be very much like them to have Schrade either etch or stamp these knives before they ship them, or they may have just bought out stock to send for stamping.

smoky did buy allot of their stock so more than likely they had someone do the etch for them. I think they're pretty tacky myself (distasteful, etc.).
