Well i ordered some 01 from texas knifemakers yesterday and shazam!its here today. What do you guys think of 01 is it easy to work? Is is a forgiving steel for the beginner? I want to grind a bowie, does anyone have any suggestions on where to begin? What about heat treating? Enough questions for now except,do any of you guys want to grind it for me? ha ha
Thanks, Luke

01 seems to be one of thosse forgotten steels and for the life of me I don't know why. It is every bit as good as 5160 and the 10 seties of steels. It is not a flashy steel but it is a good working knife steel that is easy to HT and forge!

I love O1 personally my steel of choice. Easy to grind, easy to heat treat yourself, but can still make a great, sturdy knife that will hold a wicked edge(search through this forum for advice on edge quenching/differential heat treating of carbon steels)

I like it! Great steel that can be used in a wide variety of knife sizes. And like others said, easy to heat-treat.

I'll keep on saying this. Properly heat treated O1 is all the steel most people ever need, unless they are looking for corrosion resistance. Plenty strong for all but the most abusive uses, and takes and holds a wicked edge.

Yes, O1 is my steel of choice, I bought 25 lbs of it at a local scrap yard...percision ground and still in the plastic wrap..... :D :D :D I have used it to make alot of tools that I use in the shop too...GREAT STUFF!
