Am I alone in wanting to see an Al Mar forum? I really would like to learn more about this company and their products, especially after recently purchasing a SERE 2000.

Shootist,
Al Mar was once the most innovative producer/designers of high end production knives. I use to love his stuff all the way back to when he developed the Mark II for Gerber Legendary Blades. It was a market that he largely helped to develop.

Unfortunately, he passed away 10 years ago, and his family has managed drop all of his original product line.

The company remains in name only. There isn't much of a story here. This brand belongs on the collector's forum.

Al Mar has played a major role in the evolution of "tactical" knives. Today people just seem to care about Benchmade, Microtech etc. I doubt if those companys would have existed without Al Mar.
Also, most Al Mars were manufactured in Japan by extremly high standards.
The SERE 2000 seems to follow in this tradition.
I think there would be room for an Al Mar forum!

Seems like the only way to get Al Mar info will be a through a forum. They have advertised their site in knife mags for months but it's still not up. Tonight I was visitor 8339. Inexcusable!!! Someone should be in hot water!!!

Dennis,
Could you please comment on the SERE 2000 and tell me what you think of it? I hear it is a wonderful knife and if you like it then I know I would like it.....
Thanks,

Greg

Gester, you are right. It seems there is nowhere to turn to get up to date info. especially about the new products. Very dissapointing. If I knew that Mike and Spark wouldn't get upset I would call Al Mar myself and try to get them to obtain a forum.

Kodiak, I really like the S2K. Chris Christman strongly recommended it, and you know how knowledgable he is. One of the best quality production knives I have seen in some time. Alot of though went into this one. Here are some threads that go into more detail:

Hafta agree with not2sharp, since AlMar's untimely death the company has taken a most significant turn, and in my opinion, not for the better. I've had about 8 of the older style AlMar folders and the workmanship was excellent, inside parts were even polished and all worked smoothly. Lucky for me the guy who bought them from me lives near by and I made it so I would have visiting rights!

The new stuff....leaves me wanting. As for a separate forum for them, I think that James summed it up, if they do not have time for they're own web site......?

Shootist I am with you on this. An Al Mar forum would be a wonderful way to get information. If the SERE 2000 is an indication of what to expect in the future, then I would that Gary McFadden has this company heading towards what it was when the late, great Al Mar was leading the cutting edge in knives.

If the quality of the S2K is any indication artsig1 is right. Al Mar very well could be on the way to reclaiming the greatness this company once had. I certainly hope so. We will just have to watch and see, but I am not ready to right them off as of yet.

It would be up to Gary at Al Mar. All we ask is for official representation from the manufacturers in their forum.

I spoke with gary today and he advised that he didn't feel they had the time to moderate a forum like he thought it should be.

I hope that they will be able to in the future. I really believe that a forum is a great tool that benefits both ELU and manufacturer.
