What about Ivory

So what are the laws regarding Ivory, in particular, something (a knife) originating from Bangkok?
Am I wrong in thinking that a knife on an internet auction site that is coming from Thailand and does not talk about fossilized elephant ivory, but rather talks about “made from the finest ivory”, “Ivory is very rare so anyone who purchases this will own a true collectors item” could be a problem with customs?
What do you think?

Thanks
Todd

you should definitely ask if it is 'new' ivory or 'new old stock' ivory.

it is likely that customs might grab it. Animal Planet routinely shows customs warehouses chock fully of ivory goodies that were seized.

you might try over on Shoptalk, ask if any makers have exp. in importing ivory products....

If it is coming into the U.S. there needs to be verifiable documetnation that ivory is old stock or it is illegal to own.

It is illegal to import, export, own or trade in post 1989 ivory. You must have documentation proving that the ivory used on the knife in question was harvested before that time. Make sure you contact the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and find out exactly what documentation you will need and then make sure that this documentation is available for this knife. You can get into big trouble for importing illegal ivory, so don't take any chances.

I was reading in a magazine article, the other day, that in Africa, the Elephant is no longer considered an "endangered species", seems that there are well over 500,000 of them, and climbing rapidly.
They are still considered endangered here, for political reasons.

Trade in endangered species is one of US Customs' hot buttons. If there's any question at all they will most likely stop it and then the burdon is on you to prove that it's ok or loose it.

I've heard of nightmare problems with Customs and ivory. It amazes me that the Feds get ballistic over ivory, but can't seem to keep mass murderers from crossing our borders.

Thanks for the replys and it’s as I suspected and as you all have indicated, something just wasn’t right. And also, all of the items have been removed from eBay much like I have seen Switchblades (or as Italian Stiletto’s as they are advertised) disappear when somebody happens to notice. I’m happy I didn’t get involved.
