What about the screws, Show or no show?

Most of the Sebenzas I've seen have the hex head showing on the front (or decorated side)of the knife. I've even seen a couple with one or two of the heads showing and the others not.

I've taken my two Sebenzas and put the screw heads on the back sides and the smooth edge on the front. I think they look much better this way and I wonder why the reeves don't do this all the time. Am I missing something?

BTW, this wasn't my idea. I got it from another Forumite.......Jackyl I think.

What do ya'll think?

We had a thread on this not too very long ago.

I think most people like the screws as they come from Chris, and appreciate his design and style.
Whether or not reversing the screws have any affect on strenght or function is something the Reeves would have to answer.

Thanks ThomM,
I knew I had seen it discussed before, but that was before I owned a Sebenza, so I didn't pay attention. ilooked around on this forum and couldn't find the thread.

I'll keep looking! Take care.

I always reverse the screws on my Sebenzas...they just look better IMO. Doesn't cause ANY damage or loss of strength. Just a matter of preference. I think some polished / reversed screws would look great on a small, plain Sebenza!

Thanks Spidey!

I guess it's personal preference. It would be nice to see if Anne or Chris have any particular reason for putting them in a certain way. One forumite, JoHnYKwSt, said something about "putting it together the conventional way", but I wasn't sure what he meant. Maybe he will read this and explain

Kingknives,

If you take apart your sebenza and put it back together you will find that it's impossible to put the screws in backwards. The only way is to put it together with the screws facing the backside is to put it together by sliding the blade assembly in. That is probably one of the reasons why Chris and Anne put the screws facing the flat side. It would take an extra step to reverse them.

For me, the most natural way to reassemble the Sebenza is to put the "female" screws into the flat scale and then add washers, pivot, spacers, blade, etc. onto the screws. Then I put on the lock scale on and hold it down and put the male screws in and tighten. End result is that the smooth end of the screws is on the smooth scale.

I've put mine together with the screws both ways, and have seen others do the same. It seems that there is a better visual balance putting the screw heads on the flat (non-lock) side of plain Sebenzas, and leaving the plain end of the screws on the lock side of decorated Sebenzas. That's just my own opinion, though.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your questions. I spoke with Scott, our workshop foreman, and he suggested to wait and have Chris reply. He may have a more concrete answer as to why we put the screw on the face. Thanks for your patience. We'll get that answer for you soon.

Thanks,
Mark

Opps I guess I was wrong. I did not realize it was possible to put the sebenzas back together with the screws facing the lock side. Sorry for the coufusion.

I was about to say Johnny, that's the only way I do it...and I've never had to build it the way you described...try it...you may like it.

The placement of the screw (hex head) on the front of the knife has no particular purpose other than that's the way Chris prefers to have the Sebenza assembled. From a machinist viewpoint, the screws are always placed in the front. It's logical, it makes sense, that's the way Chris designed the Sebenza, with a simple, logical form. So..if you prefer, the screws and pins may be switched according to personal preference.

Thanks Mark,
It's good to know there is not some "mystical" high tech reason that they need to be on the front, and it's just common sense. Take care!

My preference is to reverse the screws. And also think that the "polished" screws are "HOT" even on a "plain" Sebenza!! Adds a little to the blade!
