What affects colors in ferric anodizing? Grit polish? Surface preparation?

I have seen that temperature of both the acid and titanium might change colors, but what else can be adjusted? Does it matter what grit you sand the titanium to? Alcohol vs. acetone cleaning before dipping the hot Ti?
What things can you control to get better, brighter, more varied colors?

Even the same grade titanium comes out way differently every time and I can't figure out why.
I was thinking maybe there's something you can mix in the acid bath, or add a bubbler for agitation or something. It's strange that you can't even see any sort of pattern to how how polished it. I think maybe I might be polishing it TOO MUCH, I have been going all the way up to over 2500 grit.
Anyway, titanium is too expensive to try every possible combination of things and this isn't exactly new so I am hoping someone has some suggestions. Also, some of the top makers that do "entropic" finishes have told me that ferric chloride isn't even part of the equation, is there anything else you guys are using like Multi-Etch?
Any advice appreciated.
