I was given this old (15 years or so) Al Mar knife. Anyone own one or know what it may be?
Specs:
Blade-5 in satin finished, hollow ground, no steel label
Handle-etched micarta with cut out steel liners
Lock- Liner lock
Opener- Right hand thumbstud

The strange thing is it definitely has hg blades while the current Al Mar knives are flat ground.
Any ideas?

I remember seeing that in Al Mar catalogs in the 90s. Cannot remember what it was named.

As for the hollow ground blade, I have an old AM Passport with an AUS-8 hollow ground blade. So that in itself is nothing unusual.

I'll go through the folder of old catalogs I have and see if I still have one with this knife in it, and get back to ya.

It's mine. I'll PM you address you can return it. Thanks for finding it!

Seriously, it looks amazingly like the larger Ti-Lite from Cold Steel.

Yes, kind of like Cold Steel copy-catted this design. The handles are zytel, not titanium. With a 5.75 blade it is amazingly like the 6" ti-lite.

Don't get me wrong, I got nothing against CS for copying a good design. At least it keeps alive the possibility of owning a knife similar to the dis-continued Al Mar design. Apparently most of his older designs were dis-continued after his death in 92. Shame at that, he had a lot of cutting edge designs.

Sorry man I didn't see that with the big lag I just had. I saw one in the Bay by accident. Good call!

Kind of wish I had bought one back when, they were nowhere near $295 then.
But thats hindisght for ya. Just like the CS Ti-Lite now, I am just not all that impressed with long thin blades.

Greetings: It looks like an Al Mar Quicksilver mod 2005. If the blade is Aus6a and is about 5.70" X-.75" and it is 7" long when folded, it is likely a Model 2005. OldDude1

cbxer55 if you like i might put this blade up for sale.

I have been unemployed since January 3 2009, I am not really aiming to buy anything at this point. But I would bet you will not have any trouble finding someone interested in that knife, especially as it looks to be in good shape.

The Cold Steel Ti Lite has double stainless steel liners with phospher bronze washers, a thicker blade, a stiletto blade shape, a different grind, double guards, a much more better secure liner lock (Cold Steel knives generally do not skimp on locks) and a better knife overall. The Ti Lite is based on the Italian Stiletto. I don't know what the Al Mar Design is based on but they are very different knives.

I don't know where you get off saying it's a knockoff of the AL Mar Quicksilver jumbo. You should pay more attention to facts rather than just spurt off stuff like that.

The Al Mar Quicksilver Jumbo has only one liner (the locking liner) on one side of the knife and that is quite thin. The handle is Zytel and very prone to flexing. One interesting thing is it has a friction lock in addition to the liner (typical leaf spring like on your standard Case knife) which gave it a little spring during unfolding once the blade was opened about 2/3 of the way. Lockup was alright but I don't really trust it. No where near as good as the CS Ti Lite.

As for the quality of the steel on the Al Mar, I believe it is top notch but so is Cold Steel.

I do know what type of steels are used on both the Al Mar and the CS, I am speaking of the the QUALITY of the HEAT TREAT and WHATEVER ELSE is done exploit the BEST PROPERTIES of the steel. I may not be a metal expert or blade smith but I do know the label on a steel whether it be 420HC or super duper duper ZDP189 doesn't mean a thing if there is not proper supervision and quality control in the heat treat/manufacturing process/other to ensure the properties of the steel being used are exploited.

I have been told Al Mar is no slouch in this area but neither is Cold Steel (since the subject of Cold Steel knives was brought up by someone.) By the way the 6" Ti Lite I have handled was the old 440A version which is fine by me (a bit more flex for a longer blade than the latest super duper fad steel.) The newer Ti Lites all use AUS8 steel.

I do like Al Mars though and the dealer at a knife shop I used to visit would flex the thin blade of an Al Mar ultra lite a little (AUS8) to prove the point.

AUS6 is a proper choice for a long blade such as the one on the Quicksilver Jumbo. The one I handled took a very keen edge also.

does this sound like a good ebay deescription?
