What am I doing wrong here? International calling...

Okay this is probably a stupid question but you have to understand I don't have to make international phone calls every day. I'm trying to order some buckles from this guy in the U.K. He gives me this phone number:

0044-121-323-4309

I've tried dialing it just like that and I keep getting back "Invalid Number" from the stupid automated system. Is there some trick to it i.e. leave off the "00" at the beginning or something? Dial a "1" or some other number first? What gives?

Try dialing 011-44-121-323-4309.
