What am I doing wrong with my 0350?

I broke the torsion bar in my 0350 for the second time since I got it in January of this year. I realize these knives are very durable so I can only assume that I am doing something to the knife, causing it to break. I have contacted ZT CS, and I'm sure that they will send a new torsion bar soon.

Hard to say what you are doing wrong if you aren't explaining what you are doing to begin with.

I don't think you can do anything wrong to break it. After all you are just opening or closing it. This is one of the reasons I don't like to carry an AO knife. Those little torsion springs just break, this is why we see threads quite often about ZT CS sending out replacements.

Well, all I've really done with the knife is open food packages and boxes, plus quite a bit of flicking. I'm really quite confused myself. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong with the knife, but if I'm not, why are torsion bars breaking at a rate of about one every two months?

The guys at my local knife shop ( Shameless plug... <link removed> ) say you can remove the spring and it will function as a standard flipper...

Ive never tried it though...

Assuming that you're not using it to dig through sand while sitting in salt water, you may consider not playing with it as much. If you're putting enough stress on it in a short enough time, the bar could be heating up and losing its springiness as it becomes brittle. Maybe you're just having bad luck and absorbing all the bad ones for the greater good of all ZT owners, but I'd try going easy on the flicking and see if it breaks as fast.

Okay, I'll try not to play with it as much. And yes, it can be made into a standard flipper.

Heck, just ask them for a couple spares so you don't have to wait next time. It's just a small metal bar that you are continually bending back and forth...simple logic and enough flipping with make them break. Yours does seem to have happened a whole heck of a lot sooner than most though. I've had some for years and never broken.

If you are sitting there flipping your knife hundreds and hundrds of times, that will do it. The lifespan of a torsion bar varies greatly with use. If you open and close the knife a couple hundred times in one sitting, the bar will warm up and bit and create a fatigue point and eventually breakage.
