What am I doing wrong?

Hey fellers....

When I use my Khuks, they tear up one spot on my hand (see the pics)... Is it my grip? Handle size for my hand? Am I a wimp or does anyone else have the same problem?

I don't have any issues with that one particular spot when swinging other blades because the ends of the handles are not made with the distinctive "bell" shape at the butt end.

I'm tempted to hit the grinder with a couple to remove the upwards curl on the butt where it's digging in, but I'd hate to do it... any advice from you professional Khuk swingers will be greatly appreciated!

It's easy to round off the sharp points on the end cap, and to sand any sharp ridges on the handle ring. I've done this to my HI user khuks. Dremel tool or Worksharp makes for an easy fix.

It looks like the handle should be larger for your hands, in your 4th photo it appears your hand is coming up on to the blade. You could try rounding off the butt of the handle so that its not rubbing/digging into your hand.

Many people do as stated above and file the bell down some. Round it off a bit more.

You might also be gripping the knife to firmly. You can just use a light grip and snap the wrist just before impact.

That's basically in my feeble opinion the reason for the bell. You can have a semi loose grip at impact yet your hand won't slide off.

Nobody wants to admit they are a wimp, I find girly man slightly more palatable. I've gotten sore spots a few times, just takes some getting used to swinging these blades and everything will work out fine and dandy.

Gloves may also help. I don't like big bulky gloves when I use kuks, so I typically wear gorilla gloves (light stretch fabric with work surfaces dipped in rubber) or some lightweight and well fitted leather gloves (almost like a batting glove).

I have seen some wrap the handle with para cord, when I wrapped my throwing knives I used shoe go on the handle that keeps the para cord in place but it can be totaly removed with out damaging the surface. Not sure about wood though

I para corded my Pen knife for awhile. I just glued the start and end along with overlaying a wrap or two.

I decided I didn't like it and took it off and checkered the horn handle.

Para Cord might be a viable option for you as it would give you a bit more girth.

I fortunate that I have semi small hands so the smaller handles khuks historically come with fit me pretty nice.

Guess that's one of the positives of being a little fella. Small but I'm wiry ya know?

I reshaped the handle and made a new butt cap for my Katunje, "Yangdu", last summer. Now, it doesn't bite so hard.

I also added a finger groove on my Kesar Lal to position my hand each and evry time. Does provide a better grip for me, too.

I don't know what it is, but I've always been a fan of less ornamentation, yet you constantly manage to astound me and change my mind.

VERY nice work Bookie!

I solved the problem by just removing some of the sweeping point on the top side of the butt... I took a little off the bottom as well for aesthetics. Now it's much easier on the palm area where it used to rub. Now I have to re-do some BLO soak and Tung oil treatment on the Bamboo Root and I'll be good to go.

Thanks for all the input and good idea's folks!
