A recent CLOSED listing of badly rusted GEC knives just went for a lot more than I expected. The tortoise acrylic one for $125 and the Stag for $113

I know that GEC is a great brand ( I have several) and that these are salvageable but I was amazed at how much these two knives brought. I know that I am somewhat frugal but they would have to be in a LOT better condition for me to pay that much and they will never be anything more than heavily buffed / polished users.

I suppose, there are people out there looking for parts too. I did observe this listing and thought about the donor parts, but given its condition, it would take a lot of work im sure to even get that back into considerable condition. that and a tetanus shot. I did pass on a slightly cleaner 15 the other month, that wouldve been a fun donor.

Haha I was watching those too. I'm a GEC junky and I have no problem with refurbing beat up old knives or making them custom project but, to me, those were like $40 knives at most in that condition.

That being said, to someone who knows what they're doing and wants to spend the time, those will likely clean up surprisingly well.

But will they disclose that they were heavily "cleaned"
Someone who knows how to restore knives and knows the market on GECs will make a profit on them. They don't need to include every little detail in their listing. Only takes one buyer.

I don't get the craze over GEC but I have learned that there seem to be plenty of wealthier-than-me people in the world happy to spend their money on things I would never consider worth it. I like the knives and own about 15 of them, but all were purchased at reasonable prices back before they became so highly desirable and before the recent inflation resurgence.

These two knives wouldn’t bring much more than what they sold for on eBay even in new condition. There might’ve been some shill bidding going on.

Also possible. I spend a decent chunk of time on ebay checking out GECs and vintage knives and I've certainly noticed a LOT of very fishy sales stuff going on over the years. Some I chalk up to people who won or hit "buy it now" but then backed out of the sale but there are also some sales and sellers that are clearly up to something. Those that sell an item for big money but then it's relisted shortly after, sold again, then relisted a third time. Or a knife that is not a very sought-after or even rare model sells instantly for a suspiciously high price but then a week or two later that exact same knife is for sale again but from a different seller for the exact same price it just sold for a few weeks ago.

I'm amazed anybody let GECs get like that. Maybe an angry spouse or ex threw them in a river or flushed them down a toilet.
I'm also amazed by the price, but the speculations above are better than mine.

I like to think that I would never spend GEC money for a knife even if I were rich, but who knows.

From our hurricane history the last couple years, they look like they were recovered from a house that had been flooded for a couple weeks.
We've been lucky so far with hurricanes in Michigan. I never thought of that. I wonder what knives he saved.

Looks like someone fished them out of the river.
I'm liking the divorce vengeance theory...
Somebody needs a lesson in basic knife maintenance o_O They look horrible and I wouldn't give them house room, feral....
Yeah!
How the Fripp 'n' Eno
did they get THAT rusty??

They were listed on the manifest of the cruise ship Princess of The Porch...went it went down in the hurricane.
