What and where to buy

First off let me say I know very little about knifes, except I've always had one in my pocket since about age 10.

I am in the process of looking to get a single blade pocket knife as a gift and want to spend around 50-100 dollars. I also would like to get the handle or blade engraved.

I have no idea what is a good name in knives. I have been told that Gerber, Buck and Schrade are good names to consider. Do you think these three are good to look at, and do you have any others you would consider. Also, where would you recommend purchasing such a knife, either on the internet or the Atlanta, GA area.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

But you can find out here WHAT to buy :D

I will add some brands: Al-Mar, Benchmade, Boker, Bradley, Camillus, Cold steel (sort of), CRKT (sort of), Fallkniven, Heckler and Koch (made by Benchmade), Katz, Kershaw, Lone Wolf, Masters of Defense (MOD), Mcusta, Microtech, Opinel, Protech, Queen, Seki-cut, SOG, Spyderco, Victorinox/Wenger, William Henry

(for engraving you need atleast metal bolsters (like e.g. Buck 110) or metal handles, you can list metal handled folders e.g. here:
http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/index/foldersm.html - don't take this as a recommendation where to buy, that you can find out in TGBU)

Thank you for your information.

Let me say, I've learned a lot so far just from one day of reading this forum. There is some really good information on here.

Ok ... now, let me explain a little better what I'm looking for.

I want to spend somewhere around 100 -125 dollars and will be buying these knives for gifts. I will be buying around 25 of them.

I'd like them to be pocket knife size, around 3.5". I'd like to get a nice handle on the knife, some nice wood or bone. I don't mind getting them custom made if I can find a good person to do it. (buck seemed to have a site that did custom work, but I couldn't get any responce from the number I called).

I would want this knife to be able to be etched or "branded" on the blade or the Bolster with a small Logo. I have to do this for the advertising aspect of this deal ... but I don't want a crap knife. I'm looking for quality as the gift is really more important than the advertising.

I want to stay in the Wood or Bone handle realm. I haven't liked the other options that I've seen, but I'm willing to look if you have any suggestions.

I really liked some Gerber knives, but I could find any in the pocket size and wood tones I'm looking for.

I'm not asking where to buy this here ... I'll double post this in the above linked forum for that .... but what I would like for you guys is advace as to what brand would fall into the category of what I'm looking for. Buck seemed to have some nice knives, but most where in the 50 dollar range from what size I was looking for. Are there some more upscale names that I should look at?

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Take a look at Lone Wolf Knives, specifically, at the Paul Pocket Folder.
http://www.lonewolfknives.com/store/pages/products.shtml

This is a classic design, which appreciated tremendously in value when it was originally issued. The LWK company was founded by former Gerber people and has resurrected the Paul (along with new paul lock designs).

The MSRP falls around your range, and I'm sure you can find a better street price. You may also find more variety in overlays than the two woods shown on site.

IF logo would be acceptable on blade, what about Benchmade Opportunist ($95 but IMHO you can get nicer price if you take 25 (applies for any brand/model))

or Kershaw Nakamura ($110)?

There is also Spyderco Kopa ($110) (Santa Fe stoneworks does mods for Spydercos but IMHO more expensive than what you are looking for)

If you don't mind smaller size than 3.5" try to look at Al-Mar (Hawk - 2.5" blade) ($110)

There are also various
(for around $100 you could also be able to find following with Mother of Pearl scales (e.g. this MOP Queen is for $88 -

spyderco kopa or kiwi's are stunning knives

For an economical knife, you could go with a Byrd Cara Cara. Very quality knife, perfect for engraving, and about $25 shipped from newgraham.com

I like these as gifts, because if the recipient intends to use the knife, it will perform, and isnt expensive to replace.
