Hi BF,
Recently got a KME system and sharpened couple budge knife, works perfectly, but still a noob I'd say.
On a direware tailwhip, which angle should I follow since the bevel gets wider on the tip, should I set up my KME with the tip angle If I want to absolutely maintain the factory angle

When I use my KME I go with the bevel angle along the main part of the blade. I do not adjust for the tip and I don't worry about it. Some people feel these systems widen the tip anyways so you might have no issue.

Use a marker.

EDIT: I just looked that knife up. That's a very expensive knife and I personally would not be attempting sharpening it until I had a thorough understanding of and confidence in my equipment and ability.

That wider tip is there because of the geometry of the blade itself. Look at the thickness of the blade stock near the heel of the blade. It's fairly thin. As you move up the blade, that thickness stays constant for a while. Then the blade sweeps back (curve) and the thickness at the edge becomes greater and greater. At the last 1/4" or so of the blade, near the tip, the stock is probably twice as thick (or maybe thicker) than it is at the heel. Because the tip is nearer to the spine and the spine is thicker than the edge.

So... if you maintain a constant angle the whole way, the tip is going to be wider. Because at a constant angle, thicker stock means a wider bevel.

If the maker of that blade had done a distal taper (thinning the tip thickness) or some other adjustment to the stock, then the edge bevel width at the tip would probably be much closer to the rest of the edge bevel.

You can artificially make the bevel width the same along the entire edge. But to do this, you will have to gradually increase your edge angle as you go through the curve. It looks pretty, but I don't recommend it personally.

Blade geometry. It's neat to study and observe this and see what effects it has on cutting, appearance, etc.

thanks for the reply guys!!!!
So in simple words, just following the factory angle on the main bevel, and the tip bevel will widen itself out?
Sorry I'm a noob in sharpening so im asking a lot of question....

I've sharpened 5 budge knives, razor sharp and super pointy tip, still no confidence in myself whatsoever, although budge knives turn out to be great....
