What angle to sharpen S30V blade with Lansky - 20 or 25 deg

I have a Blade-tech Rijbak. The blade is a thick S30V spear point. My Lansky kit recommends 25 deg for a hunting knife. 20 deg for kitchen and high end steel and 17 deg for a razor. The blade is at 25 deg now but I want maximum cutting power.

If I go down to 20 deg will it weaken the blade?
Does anyone sharpen at 17 deg?
What do you recommend?
 
I have sharpened at 17. I'd say sharpen that one at 20. S30V (I have two) is very good. If you don;t like it, take it to 25 a little at a atime.
 
50 degrees inclusive is a bit obtuse.


id got with the 20, 40 degree inclusive grind.
 
I usually like my knives with a ten degree (per side) edge bevel and a twenty degree micro bevel.
You do need to be more careful with a thin edge, what would give a little nick on thicker steel has a much greater impact on a nice thin edge.
Seventeen degrees should be fine, it's not actually all that thin (relatively).
If you want really good performance I'd take it to a bench stone and thin it down to fifteen degrees per side and just use the Lansky to sharpen the edge (micro bevel).

If you're really, really careful a belt sander can save you some time.

Remember to use the Sharpie trick when re-beveling.
 
I would go to 17 per side. Its still a very strong edge but very sharp. With a nice light 20 micro on her, she will be scaring hair off your arms. ;)
 
I'd go 17 as well (or 15 on a Sharpmaker). If it doesn't hold up the way you like, leave the 17 as a back bevel and sharpen the edge to 20 degrees. One advantage of the super steels is that they can take and hold a thinner edge.
 
17 deg per side for a razor :eek::eek::eek:....? I would say that is at least 10 degrees too much.....:rolleyes:

I concure with the others: Use the "razor" setting :D.

Can someone explain bevel and micro bevel ?



The bevel is the red section of the blade in this diagram where the green is the micro bevel, greatly enlarged. The micro bevel is the last, barest fraction of an inch on the edge. If I recall correctly, the micro bevel helps to prevent damage to a very fine edge by making the actual cutting edge a little thicker.
 
DrThunder88. Nice diagram and good explanation.

I also use a micro bevel to do quick touch ups between major re-sharpening jobs.
