What angle works for you?

I was wondering what angle you guys sharpen your sebbies and/or umnum at? What would be better 20 degrees per side or 15? I'll be using the sharpmaker...THANKS

I use 20 degrees per side and get hair popping results. From the factory, CRK folders are 19-20 degrees per side, so to keep the factory edge use the 40 degree setting.

Greetings: I now use 20 degrees per side with a 30 degree back bevel on my small Sebenzas. I tried 30 degrees overall and began to experience "micro chipping, or carbide rip out or what ever the hell it was, after cutting a lot of cardboard. Both my S30v Sebenza 21 blades seem to prefer a smooth polished 40 degree cutting edge. They cut well and the edge seems to last longer at the larger angle.

YMMV. OldDude1

I use 20 degree on my small 21. The "shoulders" on the convex grind prevented me from hitting the edge on the sharpmaker at first. A few sharpenings later the "shoulders" thinned out and I can get a hair popping edge easily.

I use 20/20 on the Sharpmaker. I know a lot of people rant and rave about getting paper thin edges that are much sharper but even with steels harder than S30V, it seems to roll easily making the paper thin edges a poor choice for heavier utility work or if you don't want to sharpen it often. I generally sharpen w/ medium and fine Sharpmaker stones, then inspect the edge, then use the Sharpmaker fine stone, then strop with a compound, then back to the fine stones, then polish the edge with a clean strop. I used to test by cutting hair but most of the hair on my arms, legs and chest is gone so now I am using super thin magazine pages to push cut. I have never been able to get a full flat grind to push cut continually. A hollow grind glides through the paper sheet with ease.

Well I'm going to be a bit different..........

I sharpen my large sebbie on water stones. I prefer a thin edge on my knife so the angle is pretty low. I sharpen free hand so not sure of exact angle but it is a fair bit less that 20.

I don't need to use the stones a lot as I strop on leather a lot and that keeps the edge very sharp.

My knife will shave and it will push cut through paper :)

I also sharpen mine free hand and don't know the angle.

I cant afford water stones...so I bought a Lansky Turnbox kit and sharpen at the 20 degree angle = 40 degree edge on all my knives. Has worked fine, but will buy myself diamond or water stones in the future with more money tough as I feel they are worth the extra cost to get a hair whittling sharpness.

So, using an Edge Pro to sharpen, would you say the yellow line for 18 degrees would be the best to use to maintain the factory edge? Or use the green 18 degree line?

Anyone have thoughts on sharpening a Sebenza or Umnumzaan with the Edge Pro?
