What Appaloosa bone knives do we have around here? Let's see some pics!

I've kinda got at itch for an Appaloosa bone handled knife. They just look sweet. Boker does a jigged version, Case is smooth.... What else is there?

I don't have one, so here is a picture of an Appaloosa pony!

I will be watching this thread as I also do not have a knife with this bone but I do love it and would like to see some knives with it.

Not full blown Appaloosa but a nice Calico. Should have an Appaloosa Barlow waiting for me at home when I get back from this hitch.

I don't have the appaloosa bone peanut anymore, as it was part of my 3,000 post giveaway, but I do still have a couple pictures of it alongside my 6232 jack, which is also from 1978 and has a bit of spotting near the bolsters.

I'm fortunate to also have one of the early Tidioute #54s in Appaloosa bone. Mine is a Big Horn Moose with two regular clip blades,
instead of the clip and spear of the regular Moose.

IMO, for smooth bone, this is as good as it gets!

1979 Case Barlow from the auction site. Should be waiting for me at home.

GEC need to offer that bone again!

Nice variation in the colours from different makers, but that's just like the horse too. Ed's CASE Barlow has long been in my admiration. I have a Böker Stockman and Whittler in this bone, both attractive but the jigging is quite different on each.

Thanks, Will

I had this pair of Case Barlows put back for years. You can see my catalog numbers on the back. Then a knifemaker around these parts asked if I had any Appaloosas! His two daughters ride Appaloosa Horses, and he wanted gifts for them. How could I refuse?

Hey Charlie, the TC would look darn good in some nice appaloosa. <hint hint> ;)

Here's my '79 Appy Jack:

Nice older knife and one of the few Case knives I've hung on to. The build is very similar to today's GEC knives (GEC's may be somewhat better, but I could be biased.) :)

GEC put some out in 2009 and did a great job with it....

Wow, those do look great!

Interestingly, my #25 in "Appaloosa," also from 2009, looks nothing like the above examples. It's not just a one-off; as far as I can tell the whole run featured similar covers.

Here are pictures of the four knives from which I chose mine:

(Barry, I call this one my "Apple Jack" as well-- funny!)

I like it very much (the bone, and the blade selection on this particular #25-- a favorite favorite), but wouldn't have identified it as the same bone as the more darkly dappled.

I like the figuring on the back cover...

... but the markings don't draw from the same color values as those in the above knives. It's cream and brownish where the others are white and blackish.

Good ol' GEC bone and the naming thereof. ;)

Sarah, GEC only made the one run of the darker appaloosa that biglmbass and I have: his moose, my bighorn moose, and a big jack, and I believe they only made between 15 and 20 of each, so maybe 50 knives. Before '09 they used covers from other suppliers, so the darker ones may have been hold overs from them. The lighter appaloosa of the #25s are probably GEC made covers.

Ah, okay. As stated in my post, I was mostly working off bigimbass's cue,
Count me as an appaloosa bone fan. GEC put some out in 2009 and did a great job with it....

... with the #25s also being 2009 "appaloosa."

As I've said, I like my little Jack as-is (and knew ahead of time what I would be receiving), but this isn't the first time GEC's bone/jigging nomenclature has keened more towards confusion than clarification. ;)

Your notion of (what I consider) "true" appaloosa being a holdover makes sense, especially in light of the limited quantities available.

Thanks for the information.

Some of my favorite bone on GEC knives pre-dates their bringing it in-house. From whence (or whom) did it come? I wonder.

Not that current bone isn't often spectacular, the antique yellows being a current stand-out to me.

I've heard the name Culpepper & Co. as the main supplier of the early GEC covers.

I really liked some of the early stuff, too. Especially all the different colors of stag jigged bone they used.
