I'm interested in knowing what type of steel sledge hammers are made from,
Google only gets me high carbon with no details. I'm sure there has to be different types, but does anyone know maybe even the "industry standard?"

also if you have a list or know what common tools of steel are made of what type, please list.

That's hard to tell these days. However in the Knife Makers section I recommend 1040,or better 4140, or best 4340 ! Of course the S-7 would be included.

NiCroMo? Does that mean its nitrogen hardened instead of carbon, like H1?

...sorry to hijack, but metallugy is very fascinating.

hmmm, no "Doh" smiley... Too bad.

I shoulda known it was Nickle <insert doh smiley here>

I'll do some checking around. The wife works in the steel industry, and has a connection to Estwing.

If your looking at buying,be careful of the imports,I had one that I bought from one of the major retailers,Home Depot,Lowes,I don't remember which right now.I was using it to remove an axle from a big truck, which involves hammering on the exposed end of the axle, inside the wheels and a piece broke off and hit me in the back of the hand, luckily,I was wearing heavy gloves(I've done this a time or 2) or it would have been off to the hospital for more stitches(yea, been there done that).
