What are knife laws like in Thailand?

Hey tallwingedgoat,
If you are making a to trip down to Malaysia(Thailand's closes Neighbour down south)as well, do let me know? I'd like to meet a fellow forumite in person!
Thailands's law? Which part are you going to?
Hattyai? Bangkok? I've traveled there a few times carrying my Gerber A-F folder(big enough?) and Emerson La-Griffe and no problem. Well actually, the Police did not search me but they usually don't do that to tourist as the tourism industry is one of their country's biggest income.....of course YOU too will have to behave and stay out of trouble. Ie; no fights or aggrevating anyone. A word of caution for you when you're visiting as there are quite an ammount of triads around, so make sure you don't mess with the wrong people. They don't carry knives but guns.
Generally, people are friendly and they are most willing to help you at most times. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay as i did!
Ohh, and don't carry autos even though they sell them everywhere!

Keninshiro,

I'll be in Bankok and up north around the Golden Triangle. I'm a really peaceful guy, no danger of starting any fights.

I'll be in Malaysia for 3 days mid December, maybe going to KL. Basically I'm gonna wonder around aimlessly eat food and look at the sites. Maybe we can work something out.

Hey guys, I am going to Malaysia and Thailand too. I have family in Penang and will prob stay about three weeks there. I will also be going to Bangkok for a week or two. If any of you are there please email me. I will be there the first week of January. Later.

Just returned today from a month in Thailand and Cambodia, hopefully the jet lag will let me answer coherently. I have been to Thailand many times and of course have always taken knives (usually lots of them.) I have never asked a local cop about the laws for knife carry but I have asked locals who say it could be a problem if you were Thai. So wishsing to avoid any problems (and the possible loss of a Sebenza) I have always carried but have maintained a low visibility profile carrying folders primarily. If you carry a fixed blade I would keep it concealed. In terms of altercations, I have found the bigest danger by far is drunken tourists. For that possibility I carry a collapsible baton and pepper spray. The Thais tend to leave tourists alone. However, if you are upcountry avoid groups of thai men who have been drinking (there will be plenty of these around the New Year) as I have had problems in the past. Cambodia, on the other hand, is another story. Smile, stay mellow, and avoid the above and you will have a great time. I wish I was still there. The millenium celebration should be great.

Hi folks

I am a Thai citizen. I concur with what other people have said above, in general the Thai police will leave innocent looking tourists alone, i.e. no search etc. The threat from terorists in the country is extremely low, so security measures like metal detection and body search in tourist places and public buildings are not usually carried out (except, of course, in your own embassies). And in that case, they are not after you tourists, anyway.

In general, SAK and muti-tools are acceptable in the view of the authority. But you better not ask them about the legality of knife carrying; like in many countries, knives, particularly fixed blades, are considered offensive weapons. I agree that you may need something other than multi-tools , but please be as discreet as possible if you are to pack medium to large sized folders with you. Avoid fights or aggrevating the wrong people, they do guns, not knives. The Thais are in general friendly, though. And you can get a lot of helps from the tourist police, they display clear badges of their branch on their vehicles.

One advice, SAK and muti-tools are very pricey in Thailand. You may be able to make some profits selling them to the locals or expratiates when you leave (:0. Oh, I have another idea, why don't you pack a Cold Steel folder and the Spacial Project catalogue with you. Non-kinfe people should be very impressed with the hype and pay what you demand from them, he he. I'm in Britian right now. Wish I was in Bangkok, so that I could offer some helps when you're there.

Thanks guys. I don't know much about Thailand except from Van Dam movies. Just Kidding.

It's good to learn from the experienced.

TD: Nice to know there is another Thai on this forum.

Selling Cold Steel sounds good, unless you convert to Thai currency. A CS folder costs around 2,000 Thai baht, quite an astonishing number of digits.

That's why I could never tell my wife the price of my Brend # 2.

A famous type of knife for local Thais is called an "E-toh." It is built pretty much like the Cold Steel Bushman. Two years ago I bought a Bushman for my mother and told her it was an "American E-toh ." She liked it very much. So if you have a Thai friend you can try this gift idea.
