What are lanyards used for?

On shorter knives they can provide some extra grip.
Say you had a knife that only fit 3 fingers you could add a lanyard and then you could grip the lanyard with your 4th finger. If you have the lanyard outside of you pocket then you can pull on it to get you knife out. Plus like you said a nicely done lanyard will look pretty good.

In past times, they were used on pistols (and other weapons, I assume) to keep them from being lost. I use them on my knives only for making sure I don't drop it. (That's a real pain in the hiney when you're on the roof with only one branch left to trim and your shiney li'l knifey ends up sticking out of the ground, fifteen feet down. Happened to me - twice.) I'm not too worried about how nice they look.
