What are necessary knife accessories?

 Newbie Question Alert

I've been carrying knives for over 30 years, but it's only been recently that I found this haven of knife-loving brethren and my desire to GET MORE KNIVES has kicked in. My latest knife was an Emerson Mini CQC-7A BTS; my next knife will be an Emerson CQC-7B BTS w/Wave (what can I say - they're great knives w/a great company rep!). Recently, two spots of rust appeared on a couple of the non-blacked serrations of my new EDC, the Mini Emerson.

That being said, what miscellaneous equipment would my fellow knife hounds suggest I obtain to best care for my wonderful tools? I'm thinking of things like sharpeners (portable and/or non-portable), Tuf cloths, polishing creams (Maas?), knife lubricant, etc. I'm looking for recommendations on what a good "knife kit" should contain, manufacturers, and best sites/suppliers from which to purchase same.

TIA!

To start with, you can make do with a little, or buy everything in sight. I'm always trying something new, so have all kinds of crap.
Bare minimum, IMO, and all I really need most of the time:
-Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 for sharpening
-steel for realigning edges
-appropiately sized screwdrivers, torx drivers, etc, for all your folders for maintenance
-WD-40 or solvent for cleaning
-old rags, toothbrushes for cleaning
-lube (for lubing:p) tons of choices here
With that stuff, you can disassemble, clean, lube, and sharpen.
I would also get:
Tuf-Cloth protectant
leather strop with polishing compound for finishing edges
Loc-Tite for screws
lighter fluid if you get alot of adhesive on your blades
Band-aids (everybody slips now and then:))

:o Forgot links.
You can get various lubes, Tuf-Cloth, the Sharpmaker at:
www.1sks.com or just look up at the top of the screen and click on "store"
www.handamerican.com has steels, strops and polishing compounds, and the other little stuff is usually laying around the house, or just a trip to Wal-Mart away.

Thank you very much, Esav & OwenM! Excellent info - I always like to be prepared and you've given me plenty to start with.

Superb list OwenM ! But, would like to make several additions to your great list !

Q-tips
Ren wax
Remington oil

A small tupperware container (for your Tuf-Cloth)
~ ~ wife got rather upset when she found the one that I had borrowed one of hers

A large empty cigar box
~ ~ to hold all of your knife accessories

Knife accessories one cannot do without: Pockets; sheaths; belt or waistband of trousers.

A piece of chamois is good for wiping fingerprints off blades and handles.

Uhmmm... yah. Can't go wrong with those pockets or waistbands... Think everyone should pretty much have those in the arsenal. ;)

The suggestions here are great so far. I would also recommend the sharpmaker, a steel, a strop, tuff cloth, some sort of lube, and maybe some sort of "set angle system" like a lansky, edge pro, etc.

Hope I could help.

I'll tell you my list of accessories that I have, and my list that I want.

Have: Sharpmaker 203, Razor's Edge Systems Professional kit (comes with folding steel!), belt sander and buffer, pockets gallore.

Want: strop (thanks to Boriqua, I have the stuff to make one now), DMT diafold double sided folding diamond hone for the boonies, DMT x-coarse bench hone, Spyderco ceramic bench hones (especially extra fine).

You have to find the sharpening gear that works for you, and the cleaning gear too. If you have any blade that needs to be cleaned up, Flitz works great. I polished a Wilkinsons Sword made presentation saber with flitz, and it came out marvelous!

Here's my equipment.

1 ezlap coarse diamond benchstone
1 Lansky diamond system
1 Ceramic rod
Many sheets of cardboard
Tuf-cloth
Rem Oil
Loc-tite
Torx drivers, screw drivers, allan wrenches, etc.

That takes care of everything I need. I don't use the clamp on the lansky anymore, but I use the stones.

A large knife-drawer with partitions (tacticals, traditionals, fixed blades, etc.) within arm's reach of where you sit and drink beer when your friends visit.

Diamond sharpner
Tuff cloth and Tuff Gluide
Knife bag for Folder storage
Good quality pouch for knife on belt
Bubble wrap for fixed blade storage
Platinum Credit card or winning Powerball ticket to continue purchases

Regards,

Ed
