i have been making my own cable damascus and i have produced 4 blades so far but im runnning out of cable so i have been taking apart the cable and i have and been adding smaller cable to the mix making the 3/4" cable about 1 1/4" well while i was forging this morning i was thinking that springsteel is useable knife making material I.E automotive leaf spring but i was thinking about straighting out some springs from a old trampoline and adding it to the mix in genral what type of material are small springs made of.
Thanks Russ

A common material for making springs is music wire. 1080 -- 1085 would be common alloys. Cheap springs may be made of lesser alloys. Better springs of better alloys.

I've always heard that leaf springs were 5160. It works for me. A word of caution, though. If you use leaf springs, it's best to use just the top 'overload' protion that's shorter than the others. Supposedly, the longer ones are full of stress cracks. The short one could have them too, but I've never had any problems. Good steel and plentifull. The wrecking yards are full of it.
