Will be doing some international traveling in December, about 13 hours of flying. Hoping to find some gadgets to distract me a bit.

Sony PSP?

IPOD?

Any other ideas?

portable dvd, books, logic puzzles, lap top computer(this could serve as an I-Pod', Game, or DVD player).

I fly wayyyyy too much these days and I find that reading is the best way to pass the time. I oftern fall prey to the magazine stores in the airports and buy 3 or 4 for a flight, but those things ad up in cost over time. I now bring a book that I'm really into and then stay away from the magazine store. That way, once i'm on the plane, it's read, sleep or sit and stare at the back of the seat.

Gadgets are fine, but you can only use them during "approved" times. With a book, I can sit down and be entertained nonstop from the moment I'm on until I exit the plane. You can't do that with a Portable Play Station.

I'm one of the lucky people that can fall asleep on a plane within minutes of being seated, so that helps too.

Also, insists on an aisle seat. Window seats are okay, if you like scenerey at 35k feet. Aisle gives you more freedom. Aisle seat on an exit row tends to have the most legroom on many planes.

Hip flask. Buy one of the airline's over-priced nip-in-a-bottle drinks and then just refill from your private stock when the flight attendant isn't looking. ;)

get a good book...several if a long trip. Reading can really take you away from your surroundings in a way that dvd's or toys won't.
get a blow up neck pillow for when you sleep and a good set of ear plugs for the whole trip. The drone of the engines can be sanity crushing at times.

Gollnick, why do you have to hide your alcohol?

I've been travelling a lot these past few years. Going back and forth from London to Malaysia a few times a year. Flight time is about 13 hours.

I find that magazines and books keep me quite occupied throughout the flights. I usually can sleep a max. of only 3 hours and the rest of the 10 hours i spend playing with the in flight computer games...stuff like tetris and bejewelled can be quite addictive when you have nothing better to do. You can also watch a couple of in flight movies. That's 4 hours gone.

I also like walking around the plane. It's kind of a social thing nowadays. People standing around near the exit door and toilets and chatting.

headphones, so you can watch and listen to the movies with decent sound
As long as it's the Bose Quiet Comfort II. It's made my flights much more comfortable. Even when I'm not using it to listen to anything.

Pop a couple of sleeping pills and that flight will be over in no time.

Agreed, but I was thinking more along the lines of Valium. Had to take one prior to an MRI once. After an hour, I didn't care -- about anything. And you don't care that you don't care. Feeling that free is kinda nice for a change. Pop a Valium and Zen out for a spell.

I absolutely agree on the BOSE headphones, but all of the above items are not "first order" --- maybe not even second order! These toys are irrelevant.

The most important "gadget" for a long plane flight is an upgrade to Business Class. For 13 hours you even need first class.

Second order gadgets are definitely lounge access for the hours you will spend in the airport and limo/private driver to/from airports.

American Express Platinum can get you a lot of lounge access and buy one get one free international business/first class travel (making it affordable if two of tou are going). Continental allows an upgrade for 400-800$ each way + 10,000 miles (example only, numbers vary).

Business/First class is great. Now lufthansa has broadband access. Most airlines have movies on demand. They have power points for your laptop. If you are flying first class or business class, the lap top will be your best friend. Load it up with a few good games and you're good to go. Plus you can watch dvd's as well.

Definitely Sony PSP. Love it!!!!

I just bought one yesterday! I was amazed by the graphics the first time I turned it on. Couldn't believe it. I bought the game Wipeout Pure, just watching the intro to the game I was amazed, got a few more I'm bidding on Ebay.

I like the Valium idea.

That's why I mentioned it. I don't like airports or planes, and that was before 9/11. The last time I flew was before 9/11. Haven't flown since.

I will have to fly again, sooner or later. When I do, I'll have a nice bottle of Valium with me in my jacket pocket. It'll help take the edge off.
