I am looking for information on some large choppers, what do you use and how do you like it? Please do me a favor, I don't know what all the initials stand for so please put the full name. I am trying to decide what I want to concentrate on finding in the secondary market. Most of the wood around me is Locust, oak pine and some black walnut. Thanks

My Swamp Rat Battle Rat took about five chops through a pine tree, about three inches in diameter. It took me about five minutes to go through a tree about ten inches in diameter back in the spring. I use mine basically for clearing brush and trimming branches. IMHO, it would be better to use an ax or a saw if possible. The Bully could tell you about the Ratchet, I haven't had any experience with it.

I concur on the Battle Rat...usually decently priced and probably the best chopper for the money. Not to overlook the nice Res-C handles make it very comfortable. Check the Exchange...there are a few Swamp Rat choppers there now. Also a Rat Mastiff or Rat Daddy if price isn't a problem. Many fine choppers just keep you eyes open. For a smaller chopper the Rat Wieler or Camp Tramp are great camp knives and can be effective choppers also, but not quite like the previously metioned ones.

Camp Tramp and Rat Wieler 7"

I don't own a Battle Rat, but I do have a Battle Guard (they come up for sale now and then). I believe its similar to the battle rat in blade length.
It's a good chopper.
I made a little video clip of the Battle Guard and the Ratweiler a couple weeks back.
You can find it at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3884561172390454896
The second half is just a display of clumsy chopping...

nice video clip

I prefer the micarta handled knives for aesthetics only... But if I had to do a LOT of chopping, I'd be looking for Res-C. Battle Rat is the way to go.

My Battle Rat is Great!

But so are my Ratweilers and Camp Tramp.

Like others have said; the Battle Rat is the way to go if you have lots of chopping to do.;)

Gravelface hooked me up, Thanks
It is nice to see people that are willing to help out new rats to get their feet on the ground.
