for a guy starting a collection???

I recently got bitten by the knife bug and have added a Kershaw Black Scallion, and a Buck Rush to keep my older USA Gerber 600, and Klein lockblade company. To get things rolling I'm thinking about adding a good knife from the major knife co's, that I've heard of. I wanted to add a Spyderco Native, unfortunatly my local Wally World doesn't sell Spyderco :grumpy: or getting the Delica. I'll try another Walmart tomorrow. As for Benchmade it will probably be the mini Grip, I really like the mini Rukus, but thats alot of clink! As you can see I prefer folders no longer than 3.5", and I'm also trying to start out slow keeping my purchases under $100.00. Anyways what would you guys consider must haves for your collections.

It is only about 30% of walmarts carry Native. You can buy it on their web site and pick up in the store. Some on-line dealers sell for about the same price.
Check Spyderco Caly3, it is the great knife. It is about $90-100 at dealers, or $70-80 on the auction and worth every penny and even more. R2 also worth consideration, great EDC, limited run, 600 PE and 600 SE were made about year and half ago. Some dealers still have it. $75-85.

Save your dough and get a Mini Manix! You will love it, if you don't......they trade off fast.

This knife is built to last a lifetime of beatings

Must Haves:

Buck 110
stockman pattern with carbon steel blades
Swiss Army Knife
Ka-Bar or Pilot's survival knife
a Spyderco of some kind

I'd suggest a Benchmade Griptillian. They're a good bang for the buck, considering their blade steels, and Axis lock. Just hit the forum Search function, type in Griptillian, and be prepared for more info than you thought was possible.

Another knife I'd consider is the full size Spyderco Manix. I haven't handled one yet, but from the photos I've seen, that thing is a beast.

Surprisingly, I have neither one right now, but both are on my "wish list" for a future purchase down the road.

You might want to go just a bit over your stated 3 and a half inch limit.

The reason I say that is because IMO one "must have" folder is the Benchmade 710. It's truly a great knife and justifiably a classic.

Also, I'd highly recommend the new Endura ZDP-189. Though it's a bit too early to call it a "must have", it sure looks like it's going to be on the list very soon if not already.

The Benchmade 707 is very much the same knife as a 710, BUT will get you around 3.5 blade.

I need to get one of these bad boys
