What are the base knife options?

When FF says basic handle materials, what does that mean exactly?

Does it still include the signature pin stripe, or whitewalls? The bullseye?

What is "tuxedo"

Any pics of "base" FF knives would be most appreciated.

~most of the time, canvas micarta in either black or neutral, non tapered tang. I think it means Andy spent the least amount of time on "extras" on the knife. no tapered tang, no exotic burls, mosaic pins, bolsters, etc..

~yes, yes, yes

~A fancy suit you wear at weddings but Andy's Tuxedo means the knife has black micarta scales over white pinstripe over natural canvas liner. the colors of a tuxedo.

~If you look back at some fiddleback friday posts, you'll see a few that Andy identifies as "base price". Any post before this past september though is missing the pictures.

Welcome to the club!

I haven't seen any regular full tangs in a while. I think the SFT tang has taken the place of the full tang in basic options now.

Thank you very much solid. I'll certainly look for the pictures.

Yeah mist, I don't recall seeing any full tangs either. I wonder how the skeletonized tang affects balance. Then again, I seriously doubt Andy would go to the trouble of drilling out the tangs if it negatively impacted anything.

The point of the skeletoniztion is to reduce handle-heaviness and improve balance. I have only had experience with both with the Hiking Buddy model in 1/8, and the I like the feel and weight of the SFT tang a good deal more than the actual full tang.

SFT is the only thing I miss on my S35VN Bushfinger. With the full height convex grind it is slightly handle heavy. Still love it ;)

Yep, I feel the same about the full tang Kephart I have. The handle size and shape, and the natural G10 all feel amazing, but with the balance point being just past the center of the second finger it it is a bit pommel heavy. Not really fatiguing in use or anything like that, and I do love the knife. I just think a SFT would suit it well and only make i more of a pleasure to carve with. With any luck one day I'll have the extra money to spare to see if Andy can reproduce nearly the same knife with a SFT tang :)

Hey Mist,

If that drunken burlap Bushraptor turns out to be too handle heavy for you, let me know. :D Nice score by the way.

Any idea how a tapered version of your knife might handle?

Which is heavier, sft, or tapered?

I've seen a lot(!) of FF's over the past few weeks, and your Kephart (in its configuration) is still the most purdyiest to me. I do believe I'll have me one of those. :)

I'd like to see a SFT blank to see just how skeletonized it really is. Are there any pics floating around out there?

Oh, just looking at the taper in the tang, I do not expect that to be an issue, but I'll let you know if it is :D . Thanks man, have wanted on with this blade profile for some time, and I have been wanting something in the drunken burlap for a while too. I feel like I have been waiting on this knife for years, and can't wait to put it to use :)

Not really in this exact model no, I haven't had a chance to handle one in person yet. However I have handled several of the full tang models and have four of the tapered tang models now, and one SFT. The difference in weight in both the tapered and SFT tangs over the full tangs I have had is definitely noticeable.

As for which is heavier, I suppose that would depend on the thinness of the taper. I'd guess a SFT may be a little bit heavier than a very thinly tapered tang, but I can't say for sure as he may adjust the amount of skeletonization based on intended handle material.

The natural G10 was a departure from normal colors to me, but that was because I feared that it would stain and I often get immersed in the dirt of the environments I work in. So far staining has not been an issue and the natural G10 has aged very well with almost an aged ivory color now. I think the natural G10 and natural canvas compliment each other very well indeed, and to me the knife has a very organic look to it. This is cool to me because I love the aesthetics of organic materials, but prefer the durability of synthetics. He does the natural now and then so you'll likely see it pop up again. I think the last natural G10 was over black canvas which looks really good too.
