What are the best flares, and what do others carry?

Not sure which type you're looking for. However, several of my buddies and I have bought the Hk flare guns that hit the surplus market a while back ($50 or so with no restrictions). Been shooting the Czech flares out of them. Have had NO duds.

The guns and flares are all totally military grade (Hk makes no crap and I saw German soldiers carrying the same flare gun a year ago). The flares are about $100 for 30, but I think it's a great price.

They also have streaming smoke (for daytime) and star clusters available from the Czechs. All of the rounds (about 50) that I have shot or witnessed fired worked excellent.

I would highly recomend the gun/flares if you're looking for a full sized gun!

Swami,

You can get penflares from many outdoor stores. Their advantages are they are small and you can carry more of them.

The other option I personally carry is the Skyblazer XLT Flare. They shoot much further up and are brighter, they are not very heavy and I have used them often to great results.

If you look around you can find them for under $20 for 3 flares, especially at oudoor shows etc...

I agree about SkyBlazers. I bought 18 (six 3 packs) of them in 1990. They "expired" in 1998. Since then, I have fired one a yearto make sure they are still good. They are just as hot as they were 7 years ago. First time one doesn't go, they all go in the trash -- or up, if they will.

remember to wear gloves when firing the older skyblazers (the one without the slide up tube)... don't know if you'll get a backblast burn from the new ones but I'm not willing to try after getting one from an older version.

i carry a piece of a highway flare, to start fires with, just buy them at walmart, cut of about 1/2 of the thing, seal the end up with duct tape and there you have it. starts a fire anytime, no matter how wet the wood is, or how wet and cold you are.

rip off the end, strike the end on the tip of the flare, and stuff the flare under a pile of wood, instant fire, these things burn really hot, i have burned a hole in an empty tin can with the fusees before.

has anyone here tried the 12 guage flare guns? I have fired the Skyblazer, but never a pistol.
