i recently lost a dragonfly 2 and purchased a persistence to replace it wanting something a little bigger. i dont quite like the ergos of the knife and have placed it for sale. i will probably either get another dragonfly or chaparral. the chap looks very nice but will they ever make a cheaper version with vg-10 and frn handles? my blades get pretty beat up so shelling out over 100 bucks sucks because the knife will get used a lot.

Maybe look at a different model.
Seems you are partial to a back lock, check out the Centofante 3.

Or the Delica.

Spyderco has produced more than one knife that I thought "no way that will ever happen" when it was initially requested, so I've learned "never say never". However, FRN molds are expensive, so I'd rate the chances of an FRN Chaparral to be "fairly low".

No there will never be a FRN chaparral, it's more of a gentlemans knife, elegant handle materials (one CF and two different Ti) and higher end blade steels, I'm very confident when I say there won't be a FRN/VG-10 chaparral ever.

There's no reason you can't use a chap hard, S30V is a great EDC steel, holds it edge very well yet can be touched up by a beginner with little problem and either of the Ti handles or the CF is beautiful but also very strong and tuff, no worries about breaking it.
