Hey.. I'm fairly new to the subject of knives and have been looking for the PERFECT knife for my survival pack for about a month now.. I go on ebay and look around blah blah blah.. to make a long story short.. I find these different metals in blades.. what's the best..? I found one made of K-8 Stainless Steel and stuff like that.. What should I watch out for? Or what should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Matt

Go to your library and read everything you can on knifemaking, blacksmithing, and metallurgy. This will build your knowledge base.

There is nothing perfect in this world including knives. They all have some good points as well as some bad points. It all comes down to each person picking what they preceive as best suited for their application.

And don't buy anything on Ebay until you know a little more about knives. Many production knives are sold there for More than they should bring. If you see something you like, post about it in the GENERAL forum, and you will get more replies. This Shop Talk forum is mostly for knife makers to discuss technical issues, not to answer very general questions like yours

There is no Perfect steel or Perfect knife. Only YOU can decide what is best for you. The selection of steel is always a compromise of many factors. And I have never heard of K-8 steel.
