What are the plus's to tip up carry?

I keep reading about many who switch their knife to tip up, for what purpose would that be?

I find it easier to draw from the pocket with tip up carry. When I draw, the knife falls naturally into my hand in a sword grip. Also when you carry tip up the spine of the blade is pinned against the seam of your pocket. With it is pinned it can't open just incase something happens where it may have if it was tip down. I would much rather carry tip up than down, but sometimes it's not an option.

I have no idea and it bothers me so many makers make their knife tip up.

Strider and Sebenza are a couple that i wish were tip down.

But the spyrderco Military is just the ticket to make up for all the others. Miliies are tip down

I find the complete opposite. I have been carrying spydercos since they first came out. Tip down works much better for me.

I guess it depends on how your hand dexterity wants to manipulate the knife. Mine always goes for tip up down.... I have have been carrying strider and sebs along with other tip up knifes and it just does not work for me.

I prefer tip down also, but have no problem with muscle memory as far as tip up or down. Playing with your knives while sitting at the computer or bored will just make you instinctively know how the feel of your knife is and where your hand should go and the positioning of the handle. I can go from my Kershaw blur to my victorinox super tinker to my benchmade griptilian 551S and i know where everything is with my eyes closed. I got bit by my grippy (my first and only tip up) and so i've kind of shyed away from them. I'm giving it another go but from the beginning i've had tip down. Don't see any extreme difference, how did people get along before tip up...

i dont edc any tip downs FWIW, but i dont think it matters a lot, its just i am used to tip ups, and i edc a lotta emersons which are mostly all tip up due to the wave, i have always thought tip up was faster to deploy though vs tip down.

my other fav is a spyderco ti ATR which is again tip up.

I have an ATR and I love it..except for the tip up.

Another reason I prefer "tip DOWN" is it keeps the moving parts out of my pocket lint.

My problem with tip up is that I'm right handed so have right handed knives, but carry in my left pocket so the blade is not against the seam of my pants. I've cut myself a few times when my knife was opened slightly and I stuck my hand in my pocket. I EDC an XM-18 now, which you can swap to tip up or tip down as you desire.

I find it more comfortable and smooth to draw. That's basically the advantage. :)

Some people just find it a better setup. I think it's easier and faster to draw in one smooth motion tip up. YMMV.

I wouldn't say that one way is better than the other. It's just a matter of what's most comfortable for the user. It just so happens that many users prefer tip-up.

I'm confused??? I prefer tip down and both the pivot and the release on my auto ride at the top of my pocket, not down in the "trash".

Ah yes, Amen. That is what i meant , TIP DOWN. My bad.

Tis was late when I posted that. I will edit that post.

i find it slightly easier to get out. for tip up carry i grasp the knife with my thumb and middle finger, pull it out, then shuffle my hand up to a comfortable opening grip. with tip down, i simply grab the top of the knife with my thumb and index finger and pull it out. it falls into my hand naturally. so thats a plus

Tip down for me ! I have had two different tip up models open partway when deploying. They are both great knives,as I still have them.I removed the pocket clips and carry them in sheaths. One is a Sere 2000,the other is an Emerson Specwar.

Guess it comes down to what you are used to or comfortable with; I have always carried tip down but think I understand the tip up folks. As noted in other posts I have a Spyderco Endura that can only be carried tip up and I am uncomfortable with it; perhaps if it was smoother I would be more comfortable. My Dejavoo is tip down and it is smooth and just great. Agree with what others say about muscle memory; I adjust with various edc's but they are all tip down.

With tip up, your thumb falls right on the Spydie hole or thumb lug, and you don't have to flip the knife 180 degrees in your hand after you remove it from your pocket. At least thats how I see it.

Since I've been carrying a pistol in my right front pocket and will not carry anything else in that pocket that might engage the trigger, I carry my folder in my left front pocket. Since I'm right handed, tip down seems to work for me when I carry in my left pocket.

Whatever works for you. As long as its the way I do it. :)

tip up is my preference, just seems that my hand is in a perfect position to open quicker and much smoother

I prefer tip up because it's just a matter of sliding my thumb forward to open the folder. However, tip placement is not gonna be a deal breaker for me, unless it's a high rider (too much knife exposed out of the pocket).
