These kinds of sheaths; the ones that slip into a sort of "holder" like seen in the images below. What are they referred to as? I cant search because i have no idea what they are called.

Thanks

The holder is called a frog. The post is a Sam Browne stud, button or post. The sheaths themselves are often called bowie sheaths or sash sheaths. The carrying system on the bottom pic is a baldric. Least that's my understanding. Could be wrong but that should get ya searching....

I agree with Dave on the terminology . It may turn out to be incorrect after exhaustive research but it's colloquially acceptable now so that's good enough for me.

If I'm understanding the setup correctly, it essentially is a sheath without any mounting system built in, and it allows for a variety of mounting styles to be created around that Sam Brown stud?

Thanks everyone. I was interested in trying my hand at crafting this type of sheath, but because i didn't even know what they were refereed to as i couldn't search for anything. I appreciate the responses.

The studs were used to catch the top of a belt or a sash. The sheath was just carried under the belt or sash.
