I know a lot of us spend a lot of time and effort, not to mention money on emergency preparedness. My question is: What scenario do you forsee occurring to require the preparations you've made?

to me... survival prepardness means i can travel into any environment in the world and stay alive... even under less than favorable conditions.

and that is what we teach at our school... how to survive in any global environment under less than optimal conditions and with limited resources.

I see myself out trolling around in the woods, and hurting myself somewhere, prohibiting me from returning whence I came.
Or I see being forced to land somewhere outside the tarmac, and having to wait for someone to come find me.

Or I see merely having the ability to stay alive and comfortable wherever I plan on playing out in the woods.

Hi forumites,
several reasons for me
1) improvising and problem solving training helps you all the time, even in your "normal" environment
2)when on field exercises with my reserve unit, i need a lot of those "survival" or "field-craft" skills
3)I can think of a lot of scenarios where you would need it, even in the middle of overcrowded Europe, for instance: you go skiing, its getting late and dark, maybe fog or heavy snow, where it may be better to not descend any more, or you risk breaking your neck. with my kit it would be no problemo to stay on the mountain ver night
4) IT´S FUN

I try to prepare for the unknowns in life. An accident, disaster etc. With all the itme I spend in the wilds I feel that it is more than just prudent to learn things that may someday save my, or someone elses life. Also there is normal everyday suburban living with all of the dangers that can be associated with that. I guess like the old gunfighteres we are all looking for an edge. Generally I think the Boy Scout Mottos says it all, Be Prepared.

I suppose I train for the unknown. Look at the news and you can constantly see people thrust into situations they didn't expect. With some basic knowledge and a proper mindset, you can apply the concepts of survival anywhere, even to nonsurvival situations. I bet many of the people on here use their skills and knowledge on a regular basis, sometimes without even thinking about it.

When I get in a new situation, I'd rather think, "Huh...whaddya know?" and settle down to doing what must be done rather than be one of those guys they find frozen to death with a book of matches in his pocket.

Greg,

I am in 100% agreement with your statement. I will expand on that to state my goal is to return to Hearth and kin. Where I can practice my form of civilization.

Cheers,

What am I preparing for?
Honestly, for a long vacation far from any big city

For me, that is a sparetime activity that carries me away from our urban life back to Nature. It is also the challenge that I enjoy without the push of the "workplace survival".
