So, gun season is coming up (November 15th for Michigan). Many of you have probally already taken deer with your bows (I choose not to rewind the technological clock), and therefore already put some of your knives to use. My question is what knife are you bringing out into the field this year, and what knife if it's different do you use to process your deer? Also, just for the fun of it, what rifle are you using.

I am carrying my Benchmade Drop Point Hunter (BM190) in D2. I use a carbon steel K.J. Erickson mora knife as well during the processing. I'm shooting a .243 WSSM Winchester Model 70 Coyote.

i want to try these two. dozier k4, busse game warden.

My old standby...goin' on nearly 30 years now...a Schrade Sharpfinger. Bought new in the early seventies for $19.99........it'll dress out a deer as good or better than than any $300 custom. ( I'm sure that Dozier's no slouch, however ). The Sharpfinger has great ergos......the fatigue factor really gets minimized because it's like an extension of the hand. Great little knife ....it's a shame about Schrade......well, I won't go there.......we've been over this before.

-regards

I am using my Gossman Razorback in D2(4 inch blade) and my black Busse GW. I have some other small customs I want to try out and see whats up(dozier etc.)

CPM3V , I allways consdered a gut hook as a joke untill client requested that I make him one with a much larger hook and taller. I liked it so well that I made one for myself & one for my son, the name gut hook is a misnomer. I call them zippers. slits the skin as if you had a zipper, It is unreal how much faster I can skin an animal now.

I'll be gutting with my BRKT Imp, and skinning/butchering with my BRKT Wolf River.
Taking game with my Savage 340A, if the gods are on my side.

I used one of my 8" Buffalo knives on a recent deer.

I have a couple of others to field test. I have one of the new Blackjack Trailguides in 1095 I'm itching to try out.

I have been using a Blackton Custom knife for many years. It has 32 notches on the scales. That is 25 Whitetail Deer 5 Razorbacks 1 Redstag & 1 Audad. It is getting a brake this year because I just picked up a new Spyderco that is sharp as heck. I can't wait to use it.

I am using one of the first M700 7mm Mags from Remington that came out in the 70's. It will be a great season! Awesome Gear, Great friends BadAss Country to Hunt in!!!! I hope everyone has a SAFE & FUN Deer Season...

do you find skinning/gutting with a folder difficult, ie blood and guts inside the handle and hinge? just curious.

I have never had any problems with a folder for field dressing. You do get alot of Stuph in the knife, but as long as you clean it with hot water some time during the day it's all good. As I have gotten wiser (older) I don't make the mess F/D as I did in my youth. A little patience and experience go a long way. ~baba~

A 45/70 for whitetails? That's a good thought. I might have to give my 1895 a test drive this fall.

For me, I've mostly used the Spyderco Moran fixed blade the last couple of years. I've also used a Manix for whitetail and black bear. The Manix cleaned up easily enough with a soaking in hot water. I'm going to try out a Spyderco Impala this year.

Hey Slatts, that ones a .450 about the same difference though. I would suggest loading your own ammo and making it lighter then the factory stuff.
I took this one using Hornady LeverEvalution 325 gr. and it went clean through with a big hole on the back side luckily the bullet missed the meat.

MORIMOTOM, thank you and back at ya.

love that marlin. with the hornady leverevolution, i have hit accurately out past 300 yds with some punch left. had to aim a little high, but not much higher than my friends 308 believe it or not.
