I have been using a hand saw like used in the Axe To Grind bible. It seems to be the method people on YouTube use as well. Does anyone use the Japanese style pull saws?

I use bandsaw, sometimes 18tpi hacksaw if its laying nearby.
Its not rocket science or religious ritual experience.

I usually use the bandsaw. Otherwise I have a couple thin handsaws that would do.

I have one of those Japanese saws, but I'm not sure I would try it in hickory. You might find one optimized for hardwoods though, that could work ok.

I use the Laplander folding saw, but first I use a thinner saw blade (hand saw most of the time) to avoid premature splitting

I have a Rikon 305 benchtop bandsaw. Lovely tool when you feed it good blades. At first I thought it was useless because it won't do metal. But I cut handle materials and kydex all the time, so it's constantly in use.

When you need to widen a kerf try doubling up hacksaw blades, 2 blades on one frame. It works.

The Japanese saws just cut a thinner kerf. Either style works fine. I like the thinner kerf. I mostly use Tajimas and Silkys. There's a little less splitting or tearing out at the end of the eye with the thinner saw.

I use a back saw. If the slot it tight once inserted, I remove the haft and put the helve into the vice to close the kerf, then cut it again. It has proven to be a great method.
