What are you missing?

I don’t know about everyone else, but I buy knives for very specific purposes. Camping, self defense, work, after work, etc. Seems like I’m always finding new roles to fill. Keeps me interested in knives and gives me an excuse to buy another one.

Currently, I’m looking to replace my dress knife (BM 940-1) with something a bit smaller. Im waiting for Benchmade to come out with the Mini Bugout in carbon fiber and s90v or maybe the 945 in the same configuration. Seems like they would make nice dress knIves.

I would also like to get a small fixed blade for after work EDC. Looking at the Bradford 3 and White River Knives Backpacker Pro or maybe the Caper.

So my question is: what are you missing that you still want in your stable, collection or whatever you want to call it in order to justify buying another knife? 😁

Who knows, maybe one of you will give me another role to fill, an excuse to buy another blade.🍻😁

Despite the fact that fixed blades bore me and I have no real use for one currently, I still occasionally think about getting a small edc one to have just in case I might need it. If I need a camp knife I have a Becker BK5. I haven't camped etc in 8 years. I know if I buy a small fixed blade it will end up in a drawer, forgotten about.

I never really need an excuse yo buy another folder, though justifying to myself spending over $200 has gotten tough.

Here you go - The Carothers DEK1 in D3V. The finest EDC knife ever made! IMHO

To answer this, let me quote Douglas Adams:

“The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question 'How can we eat?' the second by the question 'Why do we eat?' and the third by the question 'Where shall we have lunch?”

That is a wonderful analogy of my knife journey:

1. I need a knife!
2. For what do I need the knife?
3. What is the best, most beautiful knife for this given task for me?

I am in the sophistication phase, so my basic knife needs are filled and I like to get the knives that I find the most beautiful, grailish etc.

Right now I am looking for a beefy one handed slipjoint (stupid German knifelaws) that resembles the Delica (saber ground (must)– thumb hole(must) – no choil(must)) with a deep carry clip and all black…

It is actually always nice to be on the hunt for the next knife😊

I love the Spyerco Endura. I started making sure I had one of every color of the FRN. Gave it up quite quickly, I don't need 12 FRN Enduras or however many there are. Now, I just want to add a Zdp 189 and K390.

Generally, if I like a knife and I can afford it (I'm a strict budget person), I'll buy it.

A few ideas for the OP ...

Time to move on to "I must have all sprint runs of X to complete my collection". Granted, a lot of knives don't have sprint runs. I'm guessing you own some knives with sprint runs associated with them.

Do you own Swiss Army Knives (SAK) or multi-tools (MT)? The journey to find the perfect SAK or MT can take a few, ah, tries ;).

Almost forgot, has the role of "when Zombies attack the house" been taken care of yet?

It's not what I'm missing that keeps me buying knives. It's what I want after going through the knife porn pics here and lusting after something someone has posted, that I convince myself I need one of those. Which isn't all that difficult.

An incredible looking knife for sure. A little large for me on the EDC side of things. Looks like a one and done outdoors blade. Those scales, wow.
I’m missing a Shirogorov F3. I’ll be ordering this today…

Shirogorov. Grail knives for sure, at least for me. The 95 turtle is the one that always caught my eye.

Good analogy.
As far as, “for what do I need the knife?“ many times I find myself trying to realize better alternatives to what I already own. I find this adventure more relevant in knives for work and outdoors, but recently I changed my philosophy on SD knives and made a purchase accordingly.

So true! BF is a dangerous place to frequent. Hold on to your wallet with both hands.

Hi Jeff,
The sprint run rabbit hole almost got me once with the Benchmade 940s. I still fantasize about it, but alas, the budget just won’t allow for it.

I do own an SAK, the Backpacker (Eddie Bauer edition) which was a gift from a good friend. Truth is, I don’t use it much. I think the toothpick is my favorite accessory.😃

Zombie knife. Now we’re talking! I have the Humphrey Gunfighter Bowie which should take care of most situations, but I recently bought my wife the TOPS Mohawk Hunter, and at first sight, one of my first thoughts was, man what a great zombie knife. Heavy duty and very stabbilicious.

I used to buy knives for specific purposes, but sadly these days, those purposes are few, and I have way more knives than I'll ever be able to use (much less use to the point of dullness!) in this lifetime. So, I stopped lying to myself some time ago. Any knife I buy these days, it's merely because I want it. I haven't had much time in the past year or two for camping type outings, and my daily uses would primarily be eating, food prep, package/envelope opening, and thread snipping, which of course could be handled by nearly any knife.

That said, I have specific knives for uses that I don't currently have, to be fair. Zombie killin', chopping, animal processing, wood carving, self defense, beach days, and so on. The good thing about knives is that they don't have an expiration date and don't go bad!

Although I don’t do animal processing anymore, for many years I hunted and trapped. As a kid I was able to make a small amount of money selling opossum and coon pelts. I found that nearly any blade, within reason, would work. I used a USMC exclusively for nearly 30 years.

Beach carry has often come to mind. Always thought that one of the Spyderco H1 series would work well.

Yessir, it's what I have. Of course, full disclosure, I am not much of a beachgoer, despite living in a state that's number two in the country for beaches (Florida). So, it doesn't see much use, but Spyderco does put these together pretty well!

I don't have a large fixed blade yet so I'm probably gonna pick one up soon. I think I'm gonna go with a Lionsteel T5.
