What are your carry options for a 4 day hike?

Imagine, you and your son or friend are going on a 4 day hike in a picturesque mountain range.
What are your knife choices? and What range would you choose?

I would take a Golok, Spyderco Delica, Leatherman supertool, and a CRKT Hammond ABC.

I would pick a range, I haven't done yet. The Ozarks in Arkansas.

My son would carry a Cold Steel MasterHunter and a SAK fleldmaster.

Hiking with a friend or wife I would take along my Tak-1 or Howling Rat as a small fixed blade and perhaps my LM Wave or Supertool to fill the gaps. Weight is always an issue so I would leave the trail clearing stuff home.

Mountain range means above or below the tree-line?
If above, I would leave the Golok at home since there would be no use for it.
Otherwise I think you would be ok with what you've chosen.
Personally, I would rather go for a hatchet/small axe than the Golok though. But that's all a matter of personal taste and what you expect to chop.

Backcountry type hiking = Cold Steel SRK, Spyderco Calypso Jr. and Victorinox Spirit multi-tool

Hiking on an established trail = Rat-3 in D2 and either a Victorninox Spirit multitool or Victorinox Sportsman.

Oh yeah almost forgot my Gossman PSK knife which is paracord wrapped and in my PSK and with me at all times when I am out and about.

A folder in the 3.5" range, SAK Trekker, or a mora. There's always a little knife/multitool like a Leatherman Micra or SAK Classic. If I was really concerned with survival techniques, I might add a light saw like the Gerber Sport Saw, or just rely on the wire saw in my PSK. I've had larger stuff and dumped them as I left them at home when it came time to pack up as I didn't want to haul them up a steep hill. The biggest knife I have now is a CS Bushman.

Depends on the territory and risk. 99% of my knife use is going to be cooking, grooming, trimming line and a stray thread. I'm not building fires, so there's no need for big tools unless I were separated from the rest of my gear.

I've come to the conclusion that I would rather spend the weight on a selection of gear rather than just one cutting tool. Haul a lighter knife and you can spend the weight on a PSK that will cover a wide range of needs-- more food, water treatment, line, snares, fishing gear, first aid, backup navigation, lighting, etc, etc, etc.

Well, I've done the Cascades, Olympic mountains, Rockies, NE Georgia and the Smokies around Cherokee, NC...the Ozarks are on my list:D

Well, I'm debating on a large knife (Siegle Hoodlum or Fehrman EJ) or a good hatchet like my GB Wildlife for myself...depends on the season and my mood;) Hopefully I'll have my BGoode Trailsman next fall when I redeploy from Iraq, if not I'll give my TOPS Pasayten the nod for my camp/utility knife. Most likely, I'll carry my older Leatherman Wave along with my SAK Rucksack, and for a all-round folder, I keep going back to my "field Sebenza", the Ritter RSK-1 axis folder.

My son (8) already has his "collection". He has his Mora Clipper with a Sheathmechanic Kydex sheath including the piggy-backed Swedish fire steel. He also has his SAK and his little Benchmade mini-Griptilian in neon green.

I think we would be set for a little trip...

Rock6, I've done the Cascades and Olympics as well. How do they stack up in comparison with the other ranges on your list?

I have something like that coming up (5 days in the Sierra) and I am taking my NWA knife, my Murray Carter necker, and a RuckSAK. I'll have my wife carry the Bravo 1 as a backup (and I wanna play with that one too :D) I may also bring my GB hunters axe for base camp, but haven't decided. I want to see how much can be done with just the knives I'm bringing.

Rock6, I've done the Cascades and Olympics as well. How do they stack up in comparison with the other ranges on your list?

Well, I grew up in WA (both sides), and the Rockies (northern part) was a lot like the east side of the Cascades.

I've spent a couple tours in Georgia and other than no major peaks, both NE GA and western NC were very similar to the rain forests you would run into in the Olympics. Of course, they were much nicer looking in the fall.

They are all beautiful compared to Iraq:D But I must concede I've seen some really nice areas in TX (where I'm currently stationed stateside), NM and AZ...the Army does a good job at putting you in great areas to enjoy the outdoors;)

ROCK6

I would carry a SAK Rucksack and my son a Forester. If we had to make a fire then I would add a Weterlings Small Hunter and maybe a Mora Clipper or a Ruana 95ad. If we are carrying a stove then just the SAKs.

I would like to hike from Lake Tahoe to Hell Hole Reservous following the Rubicon River in the Sierra Nevada.

I'd probably go with a combination of either a proper tommipuukko or a Fällkniven F1, with either a Fällkniven A1 or a M.95 J-P Peltonen sissipuukko. No folders for me. Might bring along a Leatherman Fuse if I felt like I needed it, but typically I wouldn't. So it'd be one normal size knife with a bigger, about 6" knife, and perhaps a multitool on top of those two. This type of gear combo has never failed me so far.

For actual mountains, I'd head for Norway - no mountains to speak of in Finland. Plenty to choose from over there.

My SAK Camper, Stainless Mora Clipper, my friend would have his Schrade lockback and a different Mora, one of us would have a Gerber Axe or Folding Saw.
I'd have my SAK Classic in my PSK...
damn, I need a new PSK knife.

I'd take my Scrapyard Dumpster mutt and a SAK, probably my climber, I also have a classic in my PSK !
Any mountains would do me, cascades would work !!!

Well, as soon as I get a new sheath for my BK7, that on my belt. Masterhunter horizontal on the back section of my belt and Vic rucksack, huntsman and camper in various spots. Plus I allways take my leatherman wave. :D

Sierra Mountains in CA.
Leatherman Wave
Mora #510
hatchet

That is pretty much my only options because I live in CA and the those are the only decent user knives I own at the moment. But hey you can't hardly beat the Sierra Mountains, man I need to go camping soon.

I'd go with
Leatherman Wave
Gerber sport saw
Howling Rat LM
If it was winter/bad weather I'd take my Gerber axe too.
I guess I'd go with the Cascades.

This is what I usually take

My options: Ontario TAK or SRKW Howling Rat, Vic OHT or Leatherman new Wave and a Opinel no.8 or Mora

leave the choppers home but neckers are always welcome!
