OK guys, let the opinions fly! What are your favorite sharpeners and if they have web sites post those up too so we can all check them out. What grit sizes do you use to begin and finish sharpening your blades? Let's see how many different online resources we can come up with.

Just from reading the book and seeing that these guys are fairly squared away, I have ordered a big super fine hone from... www.razoredgesystems.com

Only time will tell if it's any good. They say their hones are in the world records for performance though.

I'll tell you what is NOT my favorite sharpener and that is the deleriously popular spyderco 204.

Ryu, the Razor's Edge kit is OK, but it has flaws. The angles aren't adjustable on the clamp on guide and the guide lays on the stone and therefore will get flattened and cut into by the stone. It does work pretty well however, and it also has fast cutting stones. Personally, I prefer the Edge Pro sets. http://www.gorge.net/business/edgepro/

The Razor's Edge kit does gradually teach you to freehand sharpen though. My experience with the super fine hone is that it isn't that fine, though it does put a pretty good edge on the knife.

Spyderco Sharpmaker for me! I have an "old" Model 203, and that sharpener is EXCELLENT.

PS...I have a Lansky Deluxe Diamond Kit (with "extras") that I'm looking to trade for a Spyderco Sharpmaker Model 204 if anyone is interested.

I like the Razors Edge system very much. I've been playing around without the clamps with moderate success (more practice needed that means

. I recently purchased a 10" hone from Hand American and it works really well for maintaining edges in conjunction with the Razor Steel in the Razors Edge kit.

I'd have to ring in in the Razor's Edge side too. I have the pro kit (big and small clamps, 2" thick, 8" long stones, edge tester (plastic stick that does do a good job!!!) and the folding steel. Last night I took my Sentinel to the stones freehand. Scrub, scrub, scrub away that damn thick Benchmade edge and *POP* goes the burr! Other side, scrub..... *POP* goes the burr!!

their stones do cut very aggressively. I too find the fine stone not as fine as they seem to advocate in their book. Tehy say get the finest stone you can lay hands on, yet, if you are doing slicing type work a slightly rough edge is the better one. Having said that, that is exactly the edge this system produces!!

You can't beat their folding steel either. Oh, sure the guides wear out, but they are replacable at a low cost. They do take some getting used to, but once you do they work as promised. I almost sent my kit back because I couldn't get the hang of the guides, but I am glad I kept trying. ANd when you want to practice freehand skills, it is no problem at all! Good kit all in all. Not as fool proof as a Sharpmaker, but I get noticeably better results.

Does anybody use primarily a Tormek

with other techniques?

Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 for me I've done it by hand and by Lansky and it doesnt compare to my 204

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Beam... Who is SKARB? Where can i find their stones. So the razor edge fine stone is good but maybe not a final finisher huh? Something to think about. I have a sharpmaker too. Wish I could have gotten the older modle that came with the coarse rods. As for guided systems... I don;t use them. I sharpen free hand. Some folks swear by the gaurds but I manange to pop the hairs off my arm everytime. Anyway. Where can I find this SKARB. I'll check out edge pro.

Edge pro looks cool but I don;t like guided systems. I like big flat wide thick stones that you can hold in your hand and sharpen a bowie with. Anyone got a resource for big stones that don;t require water or oil. Like a ceramic block maybe. that would rock.

i profile with the lansky...and finish it off with the sharpmaker 204...works for me!

Usually, the Sharpmaker 204 does the trick. When heavier guns are called for, The Lohman diamond sticks or Meyerco Sharpen-It really cut. I finish my finer edges with my Illinois razor strop.

I have a Norton 8"benchstone india-crystalon,works great for most of my fairly straight edge knives.
I think one of the most underrated sharpeners is the Ultimate Edge diamond oval rods.It can sharpen serrated blades also.In my opinion its better than D.M.T. and E.Z.Lap.
Most of my sharpening is done on a medium & fine Crock sticks. If I really want a fine edge I have an 8" peice of wood with a handle, that has a black stone on one side and leather on the other for stropping.

Ryu, don't count out the Edge Pro so quick. I've sharpened khukuris and a machete with mine, as well as a Ka-Bar and some other big knives. It's a very versatile system. Before you count it out you should at least send in a knife for the free demonstration.

Ryu, the Edge Pro set will sharpen a big Bowie knife real easily. It isn't clamped down, you draw the knife as you go. Works fine on my mom's really big kitchen knives.
