I grew up hearing my Uncles talk about fighting in WW II and as I got older I became something of a WW II buff. So I always enjoy these Memorial Day movie marathons and specials. I realize that some of the movies are heavily fictionalized accounts but I like them nonetheless. Some of my favorite WWII movies are (in no particular):

Saving Private Ryan
Midway
Battle of the Bulge
Patton
The Longest Day
To Hell and Back
Sands of Iwo Jima
Battleground
From Here to Eternity
Wake Island

So, what are some of your favorites?

I really enjoy a very-little known film called Lion of the Desert. It actually takes place between WWI and WWII, and it's about the Italian invasions of Libya by Mussolini.

This movie is told from the Arabs' perspective, and I've read where this film was financed by Muammar Khadafi. That would be an interesting but unfortunate piece of trivia if true.

From Here to ....

This was the OLD military lifestyle. Not saying it was correct but the military was more focused on everyday training and there was a RIGID pecking order. If there was a pet project from above, you would particpate to the fullest . Incidentally ,the book was banned by the military. Ouch !
Cannot speak about WW II but during the Korean war reluctant draftees got "special handling " from some noncoms.I had one man in my platoon that was a short-timer & refused to get up at first call. Top told me not to touch him because he was in the minority but for me to inspect the underside of his bunk before I gave the drop your_____ & grab your socks call I flipped his cot upside down.I enjoyed that very much !

Uncle [am I that old ?] Alan ;) :D

I think the best naval movie for WWII is "The Cruel Sea" , a story about a british frigate, made in the 50s I think.

Run Silent, Run Deep is a good submarine flick.
There are a number of good flying movies but the ones not mentioned already escape memory :(

Mister Roberts has always been a favorite of mine, great performances and terrific script, funny yet heartfelt with one of the best final lines in film history.

Saving Private Ryan.

And Catch-22, as long as you fast forward throught that long boring Fellini-esque part where Yossarian stumbles around Pianosa all night.

Lots of great mivies mentioned here.

I'd like to add "The Mission of the Shark" and "The Great Escape."

yup my favorite is saving private ryan, the great escape was good too.

Band of Brothers was extremely good, though its not a movie as was said.

Sahara, the old one with Humphrey Bogart, and Back To Bataan, with John Wayne(best movie scream I ever heard when the truck full of Japanese soldiers was run off the cliff). ;)

Propaganda, but good stuff anyway. ;)

And... Sink the Bismark because I still love Battleships!!!

My kids & I watched & followed the USS North Carolina travel from the ocean up the Cape Fear river in Wilmington,N.C. The channel was marginal in spots & if my memory is good she drew 32 feet with almost empty bunkers .
There is a bit of lengthy explaination on it's final berthing & if you want to hear it email me your phone # .

[ I :) type at a snails pace & am getting slower.]

I just got through watching Hell is for Heroes. I had not seen it in years, what a great movie. BTW, "To Hell and Back" is the Audey Murphy movie of which you are thinking.

Also, let me add "In Harm's Way" to the list.

Private Ryan, Where eagles dare ,dirty dozen, guns of Navaron, the bunker, Iron cross , to name a few

I always liked Kelly's Heroes, the Flying Tigers(p-40 fan) Tora Tora Tora was
pretty good. Midway was great. Enemy at the Gates was alright.
There was a Errol Flynn movie were they were smuggling people out of
Norway that was okay.

Just a few that I've liked. (saving private ryan of course).

Been interested in WWII since childhood.

Always liked a good air combat film, and I play WWII flightsims now. Not too many of high quality, though. Battle of Britain, 12 O'clock high are standouts. So many of the WWII vintage jobs used really awful aircraft models...

Das Boot was terrific. Any of you submarine-flick fans play Silent Hunter? I just got SH III, it's pretty deep. You can play at very high realism levels.

The Enemy Below...Did you recognize any of this film in the famous Star Trek ep where Kirk encounters the Romulans for the first time?

Sink the Bismark, Tora Tora, Midway...All good naval films.
I've got a couple of odd ones in my favorite list too. Morituri, with Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, etc. Very, very dark. Also the first iteration of The Thin Red Line, with Kier Dullea and Jack Warden. Liked Enemy at the Gates, but they messed up the ending. The historical account (probably fictionalized) was better.
