What are your knife buying rules?

I try to get knifes that have different "strong suits" or that are used for different purposes.

This, as well as a few other things. I try to make my purchases in a way that expands my range of possible tasks rather than buying multiple tools that fulfill the same role. I look for function above all else, often for a particular task or set of tasks. I also generally try to maximize the performance I get per dollar. As a result my knives and tools are generally pretty humble, but that's because all of the money went into making them work well--not making them pretty. :)

I don't like combo edge.
I prefer tip-down but will ignore this rule occasionally.
I don't like recurve blades, I do like blades with a keen point.
I want folding knives to have clips, one-hand opening and some lock other than back lock.
I rarely buy a knife that isn't more than 3".

Not made in China.

Fills a need, or at least a theoretical gap, in my existing collection. While there is no rational reason I should ever by another knife, if X could conceivably fill a certain niche better than something I already have, I'll consider it.

No combo edges.

What's wrong with lock-backs? Just your preference?

my rules are as follows
  • Avoid serrations
  • no black blades unless DLC coated
  • NO chinese knives unless they hold nostalgic value
  • boxes are a huge plus. (I have a thing about keeping boxes for everything I own)

Self imposed rules....

- No half serrated half straight blade.
- No combat style knives
- No tactical blades
- no signature knives from "survival TV" personalities

Government imposed rules

- no bali songs
- no flick knives
- no push blades
- no daggers

Recently - No one handed openers (f-king seriously?????) Customs will take these...

I should have a rule for no purchases after 8.00pm. I should also have a 24 hour cooling off period before buying a new knife that has excited me (but that doesn't really happen).

Do NOT shop for knives after drinking, thats pretty much the only rule hah

I avoid fixed blades with thumb ramps. I avoid blades with a heavy coating(paint) on them. I do like spyderco dlc coated black blades. I try not to get a sharp pointed skull crusher(saves on me). I avoid anything a mall ninja might want in a knife.

My rules:
1.) No serrations
2.) Tip up carry has to be an option
3.) Some way to add a lanyard
4.) I must see myself using it in some way
5.) Decent Steel
6.) From a reputable place or person
7.) easy to sharpen and care for
8.) I don't really like bead blast

My rules are ~~ there are no rules****I like it I buy it ~~ plain and simple ~~ don't care where it is made or how much it cost ~~ if there is a way to get it it then it is in one of my Safes.! My EDC today was a "China" Spyderco Robin and yesterday it was a Unique Design Small Sebbie ($30 knife to a $430 knife) and who knows about tomorrow ~~ might be a Buck 112 .! Never know.*
