Hey all,

I was wondering what your sheath preferences are for smaller or edc knives. I'm not a professional leather worker so I don't know the right terminology but I've done a few myself and Ill show some pictures of what I mean.

Unfortunately thats most of the pictures I have so if you have some JK or darkmatter examples please post them to pretty up the thread. I'm partial to what I call "pocket sheaths" and "contoured" pocket sheathsbut I also like what I can the "belt lopop attachment" sheaths for bigger knives, though they can be cumbersom in a way.

For smallish edc knives I almost always prefer a horizontal crossdraw sheath.
A setup in this position allows me to wear the knife comfortably all day, even while sitting.

These photo's are sheaths for the pooka which is a 5.5" overall knife. The center cross draw is my favorite. Rides along the belt line and never know its there. The sheath on the left is a slotted cross draw (pancake) style. Not so good for a 5" knife(can't get the slots apart enough to allow for more of a horizontal carry), but vary good for a 7" knife or even an 8" knife. It rides securely and out of the way. It does require a break in period. Of course the sheath on the right we are all familiar with.

Agreed, cross draw or horizontal is extremely comfortable and with a well designed sheath is almost weightless carry option.

I like pocket carry sheaths for my EDC fixed blades. I also prefer to use Horween leather which is soft and pliable yet stiff enough for good sheath. Plus the tan leather really gets good character, you can see the raw tan Horween leather in 2nd pic

My sheath preference is having someone else make them! The only leather I do is for the discontinued Belt Hawk. I love working with kydex, but have my brother do the leather sheaths. Over the years I've probably made around 1500-2000 sheaths, that's enough for me!

It depends on the size knife and what else I am carrying. A lot of hiking w/ pack, rough terrain, anything requiring a wide range of articulation, and I will prefer a belt loop where the butt of the handle lands at the bottom of my belt line and an impromptu ranger band retention strap.

Hiking w/o pack, fishing (especially fly), archery, shooting, picking wild edibles and I prefer horizontal or scout on the small of the back.

For edc usage I prefer horizontal appendix carry, strong side draw.

Long knife or chopper I prefer a dangler.

For smaller fixed blade knives carried on a daily basis I usually carry in my pocket most of the time. Here is the sheath I use for my Mini Appalachia and I have a similar sheath for my JK PA. It's made a little wide to help it stay upright in the pocket. It works well in both the front and back pocket but I usually prefer back pocket carry.

Here is a similar sheath with a clip.

This one was made for neck and pocket carry. Most of the time for daily carry I remove the lace and carry it in my back pocket but occasionally I carry it on my neck when out in the yard or in the woods. You can also make a belt loop with the lace or tie it to a bag.
